ability to have the app close in android 2.2

i have to kill the process every time i want to stop listening to music.

This doesn't sound like regular behavior. Do you use the (X) button on the Home screen to close the app? That should halt all playing and downloads, then close out the app.

i have a droid x, not sure if its different.

after i get done playing, use the "back" button on my X, which closes all other apps but not subsonic downloader service and app.

I believe that's normal. "Back" simply minimizes the app and lets music play and downloads continue. If you wish to close out the app, use the (X) in the top-righthand corner of the Home screen. That should stop playback, stop downloading, and minimize the app. Downloading will resume upon reopening Subsonic, but you'll need to hit "Play" to resume playback.
