various artist nightmare

Postby lazy » Sat Jun 27, 2009 7:13 pm

Ok, I admit the title of this post is a little over the top but the following problem is a real pain.

If you have a disc with various artists and would like to view all the tracks, it is nearly impossible. For Example: if I click on the artist name in the left column, I see the album art and the one song but there is no direct way to view the rest of the songs on that album. I suggest a link that allows this or modifying the album name link that exists when you put the song in the playlist to bring up the entire album instead of just that one song. Thankyou for reading this and creating this wonderful program.

I suggest reorganizing your folders/files. All my various artist albums are subdirectories of a various artist folder. Subsonic sorts by folder structure, not tags, so organizing all the songs belonging to for instance a soundtrack in the same album folder will solve your problem.

Thanks, I did think it was using tags. I will modify my batch encoder to reflect your suggestion. You have been a great help.

No problem.
If your batch encoder doesn't quite do the trick, MediaMonkey also has batch processing and can easily restructure your collection based on a variety of options.

Along the same lines...

Is there a way for Subsonic to not display the first track's artist of a VARIOUS ARTISTS album when browsing through your collection?

Example:

<Thumbnail>
Elias Ochas
Buena Vista Social Club (1997)

When clicking on the link the actual album's folder reads:

Code: Select all

1    Chan Chan    Eliades Ochoa    Latin    4:17
2    De Camino A La Vereda    Ibrahim Ferrer    Latin    5:04
3    El Cuarto De Tula    Eliades Ochoa, Ibrahim Ferrer &...    Latin    7:25
4    Pueblo Nuevo    Rubén González    Latin    6:06
5    Dos Gardenias    Ibrahim Ferrer    Latin    3:04
6    Y Tú Qué Has Hecho?    Compay Segundo    Latin    3:14
7    Veinte Años    Omara Portuondo & Compay...    Latin    3:31
8    El Carretero    Eliades Ochoa    Latin    3:30
9    Candela    Ibrahim Ferrer & Eliades Ochoa    Latin    5:29
10    Amor De Loca Juventud    Compay Segundo & Julio Alberto...    Latin    3:23
11    Orgullecida    Compay Segundo    Latin    3:19
12    Murmullo    Ibrahim Ferrer    Latin    3:51
13    Buena Vista Social Club    Rubén Gonzáles    Latin    4:52
14    La Bayamesa    Manuel Licea    Latin    2:54

2 ways to solve this issue imho:

1) I am working with the ALBUMARTIST Tag (some users might use ALBUM ARTIST with a space) - on Various Artists albums it reads "Various". This would also take care of the minor problem that artists are listed as "Firstname Lastname" instead of "Lastname, Firstname" as they are tagged in ALBUMARTIST.

2) Alternatively and maybe easier to implement: if the artist tag within one album differs name the artist "Various".

Or am I missing a switch to use these tags?

:)

@flicflac: Your suggestions sound similar to the way in which XBMC organises its music library (see http://www.xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Preparing_your_Music). It would be great if there was some convergence between different music players and the library sorting that they do.

So rather than create any sort of new tag based sort in subsonic it would be handy to copy another system. (and seeing as I use XBMC and subsonic I'm pushing that barrow here)

bumping this old thread some new life, since i would be very happy to see this "various artist" scheme as outline by flacflac implemented.

hmm how well would this work?

I have on particular label sorted in its own subfolder.

label\artist 1 - album 1
label\artist 1 - album 2
label\artist 1 - album 3
label\artist 2 - album 1
label\artist 2 - album 2
label\artist 3 - album 3

now here is where I am a bit confused.

This label also does a yearly compilation and each track is tagged.

By the individual artist(s) that are featured on the track.

from what I have seen subsonic will create multiple listings in the index.
ie. artist 1 featuring artist 2
ie. artist 2 featuring artist 1

etc.

any suggestions for properly tagging compilations for display in ss?

any help in advance would be greatly appreciated.

*note* in the future the individual artist will be moved to

music\artist\album 1
music\artist\album 2 and so on.

just would like to keep the label compilations in order

music\label\compilation 1\

any help is greatly appreciated.

thank you
bry
