Automotive buffer

Postby Paceman60 » Fri Dec 21, 2012 12:44 am

Hi Simen!

I'm (unfortnately) new to Subsonic and haven't personally tried every twist and turn of neither the server nor the various apps. I set up the server only a few days ago and had a friend of ine to try out his iPhone app whilst on the move. After reaching his destination he reported quite a bit of dropouts. (He's on the Netcom network which is not very widespread in the northern parts of Norway). I hope to test out myself on Telenor with my android app (On the blistering fast Galaxy S3) and I assume I will have better results than my friend. However, a thought struck me; would it be possible to have a fairly large buffer (let's say up to 5 minutes), primarily intended for automotive use? I live in a part of the kingdom that is not exactly spoiled when it comes to good 3G coverage. I have looked into the app on my own phone, but haven't found any setting to handle this at all.

But how I wish I had found this absolute GEM of a program earlier! All of a sudden I don't have to carry both my MP3-player AND my phone, from now on my phone will do the trick. Unfortunately I may have to charge it more frequent, but that is not your problem!

Also it would be nice if you could accomodate more room for long file- and foldernames in the droid app :P

Not sure about the droid devices, but there's an app for iPhone called iSub, which I use, and the "full" version of it allows you to cache songs. It is configurable, and will fill the amount of space you allow with your selected playlist while it has an internet connection, and at the same time it will play the songs in order.

The android app auto caches songs as you play them and you can set the number of songs it caches ahead of time to a higher number. I for example put it at unlimited so it just tries to download the whole list as you play

There is a lot you can do to minimize the problems caused by poor 3g coverage and Poor connection speeds, especially on the Android app. I only use Android so the same may apply to other apps but I have no way of knowing. The best news for someone with a Samsung SIII is that you can pack a ton of memory into the device for just those times when 3g isn't quite getting it done.

The first thing I've done is to set up a seperate website that I use primarily for mobil connections. On that site I use ogg transcoding at -q4 whch gives good quality at roiughly 100 - 128 kbps. If needed you can drop to q2 and still get acceptable quality playback at under 100 kbps.

Secondly, I've bumped my cache settings to 20GB and set my bitrates to unlimited and songs to preload to unlimited as well. That way there's always music on the phone to listen to when there's no connection available.

Set up like this, even when I'm on the road and travel through weak signal areas, the buffer is usually far enough ahead that I don't even notive when nothing is being actively downloaded.

GSIII with 96GB of storage is one nice setup!
