wishlist and feedback all in one post

Hey

I have been hunting for a good streaming system for a long time and I have tested out several different types some that runs only in Linux some in windows. Subsonic i run in Windows.
Subsonic is without doubt the best system out there now after my opinion anyways.

Here comes my list with wish list and some critics as well

1) subsonic is marketed as freeware , this is false , most of the functions get disabled if you don’t donate so it is in my eyes a shareware not a freeware , still you don’t ask for much and its fear I understand that running this site and all this coding is not free for you either. But one scud marked ones product as it is so people don’t feel tricked.

2) here comes the most central problem with subsonic system , it is branded to handle large media amounts , which it does in a way it scans fast and are able to do it without crashing (like some other system does) the problem is handling medium and large mp3 collection’s without ID tag handling (subsonic only handle folders) makes the system useless in most ways when it comes to music , a MINIMUM requirement for a media tool that handles music is support for sorting after ID tags , optimally it scud be as flexible as Mediamonkey (local tool I know) is , I need at least be able to browse after music based on genre I know I can reconfigure my folders but I don’t like to F*** up my file system just to satisfy Subsonic system. For one I backup to idrive changing the media structure will f*** my whole backup set.

3) Other thing is that the status window is not very useful , I had liked to see more statics one each users and how much they use this the system , maybe it is there but if so I have not seen it. It’s pretty basic for an app like this in my eyes.

4) media streaming is not as effective as instance Netflix , makes it harder for people with low connections to stream <--- this one I understand is abit to much to ask

this was my bullet points, so I don’t like only an ass I will say that is many many good things with subsonic , it is so easy to set up that even my grandmother had been able , nice guie , general good handling of movies and nice extra apps for phones and such.

botthom line and my personal dilema regarding future use off subsonic is the bullet point no. 2, it is not good in enough on the music side , if it had been i had been willing to donate / pay 40-50 euro for this system ..

1) it is marketed as free software, not freeware. The fact that it is free (the source code is public and released under the GPL) asserts that you can take it, modify it and remove the lock if you don't want to pay. Alternatively, use an existing fork that has already done that.

2) the fact that it is free also allows people to change it and customize it. I've built a tag based version for example with browsing by genre: http://dilerium.se/musiccabinet
