Artist/Album level comments, ability to read from txt file

Postby zeekay » Sat Feb 14, 2009 5:06 pm

Would be great if you could have subsonic read/write artist/album comments out of text files saved to the folder. My use for this would be saving artist bios/reviews. We can already search for album info, which contains the relevant reviews, just need an option to save this into the comments for the album. It'd be cool if we could search for artist meta too, which you can also retrieve through amazon.com.

Really like the comments feature, but extending it to artist, and allowing us to save searched meta, (as well as a bulk searching feature?) would be great. The easiest way to manage this would be to just save everything into text files. I already have a huge number of artist bios/reviews saved in this fashion, so it'd be particularly convenient for me.

I've found this method the easiest for long-term managment, since you don't have to worry about losing your db, all the bios/reviews are saved right into the folder with the artist/album, and this also lets you work on things by hand, which is really convenient.

Do you mean such feature (like feature requests for Kplaylist - other great streamer) http://www.kplaylist.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2366 , right ?
I get maybe only 20% right infos from Amazon, because i have much independents labels on my webserver. Maybe it would be better, get fetchinfos from last.fm , or much better, that Subsonic can read direct .nfo or .txt files from albumfolder.

It would also be really cool to have the comments posted individually by user, like a comment feature on a blog, etc.

Another idea for improvements with the comments feature would be to add a "recent comments" link on the home page next to "frequently played", etc. That way, people could make comments on albums and it would be flagged on the home page.

I'm assuming this would take alot more coding though, to implement...

Just bumping this in support, I'd really really like to see this feature :) I have artist bios in bio.txt files in the artist folder, and an info.txt file about each album in each album folder. Having these show up while browsing in subsonic would be awesome!

Incidentally, Zina does sort of the same thing if you want to look at other implementations of this feature.

Added it to the todo list, so it might happen. Just need to figure out how this will interact with the existing database-backed comments.

Yes, please add this feature...

Hi Sindre, thank you for this excellent application! :)

I have lots of meta-data that I like to store within a text file that is located inside the album folder. If there was an option to read out that information and display it it would be awesome.

Thank you.

I would also appreciate this feature. In my setup I have Artist/album folder structure with many albums below the artist.

Subsonic could look for the existence of a text file in the artist folder (bio.txt) and display that if there are no comments.

Similar idea for a specific album. In my case the text file is AMG Review.txt, but it could be anything.

THEN!!! To be really awesome, display lyrics when the song is playing!
