This is really a shame, as now I have to either add each genre folder one-by-one or move all of them into an individual subfolder, which a) adds another folder layer to the filenames and b) means I have to completely move all tags and metadata in every other piece of software I use. This was incredibly useful; any chance of bringing it back?

Hi,

yes, please bring back this feature - or, better - add an option for excluding directories straight away in the UI.
Personally I think not having this feature, either way, is a design flaw.

I 100% support this request!
It is sooo annoying to have the "System Volume Information" show up in all library listings!

Why not just put your media in a folder (maybe called "Media") and use that as your media folder in Subsonic?

I would never "share" or use the root folder of a drive as a repository...

Reading this thread confused me.

Simply because I have an external harddrive dedicated for this job. And with nearly 150.000 files on it it would be quite a daunting task to restructure it all. The problem emerged when upgrading to Win7 and was never seen in XP. (at least not as a problem). I could of course turn off indexing of the drive but I don't think that would be wise either!

I suppose I could be mistaken, but if you select everything in your root and put it into a folder doesn't it just rewrite the directory information without actually physically moving the data?

I second what you say, moving a complete structure into a folder on the same hard drive won't be so long. NTFS will only change the file path location in its own registry information for all files and won't physically rewrite them on the hard drive somewhere else.

EDIT: Implying the HDD is formatted using NTFS.

I got two different drives one for videos and one for music and both have a folder in it as root folder access for anything has always been a weird one for me... I like folders.
and when I do have to move things say from one folder to another on the same drive...or in this case into a folder for the first time, its just a rename in the file table of contents and not a complete copy and remove entire file thing...
so the complaint about that is mute...

I got 3 folders being shared for subsonic and I got no funny folders anywhere
no system vol info or recycle bin or anything

just sayin'

Seriously, subsonic is borderline useless without it.
