Rating on song level

Postby Prem » Thu Dec 27, 2007 6:46 pm

Hi Sindre, the star rating feature is great, but is limited to directories/albums, not to songs. And therefore sorting or filtering songs on rating is not possible.

I personally never listen to entire albums, only to a selection of songs that I give high ratings.

Would that be possible in a next version?

Thanks
Prem

Yep, I would like to see this too. Requested a couple of months back :)

I also would like that. In MediaMonkey it is possible to rate each song and MediaMonkey stores the rating into the mp3 file. I would prefer that over storing that information in a database outside of the music file. iTunes seems to store the rating in a separate database and I do not like it since other iTunes programs that shares the files do not pick up the rating.

I guess you could argue that the rating really should belong to each user instead of being forced on all users.

But if I had to pick between the two, I would absolutely prefer one global rating and that it was stored inside the mp3 files directly.

Subsonic would then update it's internal database whenever the music files is scanned / used.

Then we would of course need the DJ mode that could randomly pick songs based on the rating. :D

Yes. This is a must feature. Also being able to search other peoples ratings... like mserv...

searchf user=superb|good

Being able to rate individual songs is extremely useful. If there are a lot of new songs and you hear something great it will be easier to find again. Also, there are many albums that may only be three stars but have one or two five star songs on them.

Hi Sindre,

Might this song-level rating get into the next version?

Thanks

Just don't remove the album rating. Some people 'round here rate full releases only ;)

thx.

Sorry, it won't be available in the next version, but I'll consider it for a future release. My main concern is how to visualize the per-song rating without cluttering the user interface.

Cheers,
Sindre

Yeah, after thinking about it I see your concern about clutter.

The ratings that are set could be optionally displayed in the playlist like the tags.

For the actual rating of a song maybe it could be a dropdown list like the playlist load/save feature... assuming the rating applies to the current playing song only.

Hopefully, more suggestions and ideas will be made.....

I'm guessing that even after 9 years, this hasn't really found a solution? Currently in 6.0 I still see ratings as only on the folder level (when that folder is recognized as an album).

Guess its time to add another app to the SubFire suite (seeing as how the API supports it at the song level... :) ).
