grouping multi-movement works

Postby Jägs » Tue Apr 18, 2017 7:14 pm

iTunes recently added a feature that lets users group multi-movement works together, which is especially useful for those of us with Classical music. Specifically, I love it for Baroque music, so that I don't hear some random, thirty-second-something middle movement out of context of the much more developed sections:

It would be great if Subsonic could do this, too, as it is my default music player--I only use iTunes to sync the music on my various iDevices.

Well it depends on what ID3 tag Apple is using. If they're only doing it in their own database (the way ratings are, which is why ratings in iTunes don't import to Subsonic), then there's little Subsonic can do to import it. I do wonder why they aren't encouraging the 'grouping' tag for that, considering they're the ones that documented that grouping was to be used for that purpose...but many out there didn't use it that way.

Except for ratings, Subsonic doesn't have any fields that aren't stored in the ID3 of the file itself, even if it is also in the database cache. This is usually good, so that any changes survive the file getting moved around (or lost and recovered). As such, I wouldn't advise bypassing ID3.

Thus, I would agree that it would be nice if Subsonic supported the Grouping tag at the very least (but adding composer and conductor would help classical music fans, too).
