Bringing us all together with...subsonic?

Postby dcastellani » Tue Mar 16, 2010 8:06 pm

I have done some searches on the forums, and read through multiple pages of topics and I see a trend.

There is a percentage of users who have requested "social" features be added to subsonic.

Why not do that to the core of what subsonic is about. Music.

So would it be possible to link Subsonics?

I have introduced subsonic to a few friends on the internet, like many of you probably have. They have gone off and redone their music collections with the proper tagging etc and have really nice music collections.

Can you imagine an easy interface to get to those face melting crunchy grooves? Bring all the Subsonics together, between trusted users, that want to "peer".

This opens the possibility of easy sharing and multiple social features many people are accustomed to today.

My subsonic acting as a distribution point for all my devices(other computers, android/IPhone,etc). My friends could build playlists and send me the playlist. I go to play it, my subsonic server connects to theirs and streams it from that server, to whatever endpoint I am using. I add a new album and I think its awesome, so I send out its playlist.

You could bring in the chat elements, but you might just be reinventing the wheel.

This idea might have already been proposed, but I didn't see anything that was talking about just bringing it all together.

Ill shut up now.

thats a great idea, and i think the only thing stopping it from being pursued is the current copyright laws and people being afraid of being persecuted. (broadcast rights, sharing of copyrighted material etc) it's a shame really, and i hope these thing will be transformed in this decade.

Well im not talking about the facebook of music.

I am talking about the functionality being there in each install to working harmoniously with another subsonic install.

So my buddies and I can link up our subsonics and have an absolutely amazing collection of music.

Each persons subsonic would handle accounts on their local installs only, with each admin able to allow users from other installs to their collection. Fine grain control.

Each persons subsonic would also then control their own devices/methods of getting to the collections their user/s have access too.

That would be sharing music with others, which would violate the copyright terms I'd wager. I.e. people who did not pay for the music would be able to enjoy it. It's the equivalent of filesharing (unless there is a legal distinction between file sharing & file streaming).

ok. However, why does subsonic support creating unique users? If the position of its author was to respect copyright laws, I dont think there would be a user system, with the ability to rate limit downloads etc etc.

I am not saying the author has built subsonic to spit in the face of rights holders, but come on, what I am asking for isn't really stretching whats already possible with the software.

you're right of course, but allowing users you trust access to your server is a lot easier than to keep track of that with the userbase of another server. you'd have to take the word of the admin for it, because you most likely wouldn't know the users. I would be very reluctant to join servers like this, I'm scared enough as it is, being the admin and responsible for my own server and files.
