Android App Bugs + Requests

Postby cwilliams » Sun Nov 29, 2009 3:26 am

Hey Sindre! I love subsonic and I use it daily on my android phone (stock MyTouch). The following is all constructive suggestions :)

EDIT: This wishlist once had over 20 items - not little things either. Much thanks to Sindre for continuing to perfect this awesome program.

Bugs:

1. No track advance while asleep. I experience this bug approximately 50% of the time. With Subsonic as the active app, when the phone sleeps (screen turns off) and the current playing track ends, Subsonic does not advance to the next track. The instant I "wake" the phone, even to the lock screen, the next track plays. The only additional details I can give is this is not related to downloading as it occurs if I play a cached album.

Enhancements:

2. Better search. Subsonic appears to only search the TITLE of songs, with no option to do otherwise. There are two options to improve this. The first would be to have a dropdown that lets you search titles, artists, albums, etc. A better solution would be what the default music app does. If you perform a search, it displays any matching artist, album, or song. First artists are shown, and if you click them it will bring up an album list. Second albums are shown, and if you click them the track list is shown. Finally matching songs are shown.

3. Long press on folders for options. Currently has "Play Album" option, but this doesn't include subfolders, which would be excellent Also should be option to queue album (and subfolders).

4. Repeat and shuffle playlist settings. Necessary for a music player. The current shuffle actually shuffles the playlist, I think its better when it just selects a random track rather then the next one, leaving the playlist itself intact.

5. Cache folder lists. Everytime I open subsonic I have to wait for my base 1000 folder list to display from the server. Can the first few levels of folders be cached? Check with the server to see if anything is new, but in the meantime show me a cache.

6. Homescreen widget!

option to download but not play songs because i offten would like to get some new music at home on my phone and then listen to it later in the day while i am working :) it would speed up the proccess of waiting for it to play plus it wont kill my battery by playing all this music when i dont really want it to

This is an excellent list of enhancements. I would make use of most of them

The ability to manage cache in the android app is key. Left unattended the app will just keep downloading and chew up the battery. Also remembering the last playlist or album being played is also much needed.

I would like to add another dealing with cover art. Cover art displayed in the the android app is a bit weird. The image is zoomed to fit the dimensions of the available screen space and results in the right and left sides of the cover being cut off and the art work is very blurry. I would rather see a crisp clear art image with black bars above and below.

Keep up the good work sindre

Wow, that's a lot of really good suggestions!

I will certainly do my best to address at least some of these ideas in future versions of Subsonic, but please keep in mind that time is a limiting factor (I only wish I could work on Subsonic full-time...)

Thanks a lot for your input - it's appreciated :-)

I've always said when the right open source android app came around I'd contribute. This is probably the right one. I'm actually an enterprise java server developer (with EXTJS javascript frontend currently), with quite a bit of mobile experience (mostly C# .net CF, but hey). Maybe if I find some free time I'll grab the source, setup an android dev environment, and take a look.

Hopefully Sindre doesn't frown upon outside developers?

Certainly not :-)

Also, if someone is keen on making a Subsonic app for the iPhone, please let me know.

I know Subsonic is a labor of love, and you have a job and a life to attend to. Like I said, I love Subsonic as is, any extra love it gets is just gravy on top. Keep up the excellent work Sindre!

Bugs:

1. Subsonic forgets its playing and entire playlist. With other music apps, I can run them in the background and continue doing tasks on my phone. With subsonic, half the time I do this playback stops. The ongoing playback notification is still present, listing the song it WAS playing. If I click this, it takes me to the now playing list of Subsonic which is now empty. All versions of the Subsonic app have done this. With other music apps, especially streamers, if I do multiple tasks with the music in the background and really load the phone with stuff, the playback can stop. But with subsonic it stops constantly, if doing minor things on the phone. And worse, it forgets the whole playlist when this happens.

My trial expired, but I can't imagine buying a license until playing music in the background works correctly. That's a must this app needs. I did like this app when it was in trial mode -- it's almost there! Keep up the good work.

bug with subsonic on my droid

Postby connor3485 » Tue Feb 23, 2010 2:46 pm

when i try to play a certain mp3 file on my droid with the latest subsonic on my droid, it fails to download, giving me this error: "Error downloading "Esther >".
/sdcard/subsonic/music/The Clifford Ball DVD (V0)/Disc 1/05-Esther >.mp3.partial (FileNotFoundException)
I've played this file with my subsonic server through the web browser, so i know the file is there and its good and its limited to the android app. I'm no programmer, but could the ">" character be causing the problem?

also, this is more of a suggestion...would it be possible for donors to have access to pre-release builds?

Really appreciate what you're doing!! keep up the good work.

Hey, i just want to start off by saying that I adore Subsonic as it is a really cool and useful thing when i only have my phone but want to listen to all my music.

One thing i would like to point out about the app though is that if it has an error downloading it will continually pop up on my CLIQ/DEXT when i click clear notifications.

That's my only real complaint.

Your Android app is awesome
Your Subsonic software is awesome
You are awesome!
Subsonic is soooo cooooool

Yes, I agree, that is a bit annoying. Will try to address that in the next release.

Thanks for your kind feedback :-)

I haven't provided feedback for a while, and the last few app updates have been amazing. They addressed all my bugs, and introduced the excellent cache/download control. I have updated my wishlist to reflect the latest app.

one thing i'm have trouble with is, when my phone (HTC Incredible) is connected to my WIFI i can't connect to my Subsonic server through the Android App or through a browser to my URL. However, once i disconnect from my WIFI and use the 3G network both work fine, and if i leave the app open, then reconnect to my WIFI it will still function. Not too big of a deal, I have yet to try it on WIFI away from home so i don't know if it's a problem with me being on the same LAN network when trying to connect or if it's a connecting with WIFI problem.
