Hide/Exclude folders - once and for all...

Postby nelgin » Mon May 20, 2013 2:59 pm

I've seen a lot of discussion on this but I've not seen anything specifically implemented within the software. This is starting to become a show stopper for me.

My files are laid out as such...

/mp3
/mp3/Artists
/mp3/Artists/A
/mp3/Artists/A/what...
/mp3/Artists/B
/mp3/Artists/B/...
.
.
/mp3/Artists/Z
/mp3/Artists/Z/ZZ Top
/mp3/Collections
/mp3/Classical
/mp3/Uploads
/mp3/Podcasts
/mp3/Xmas
/mp3/TABS

This works just fine for me. The left pane shows "A-Z" across the top etc.

Now two problems. It's May, I don't want to listen to Christmas music. I want to turn off these files being played during the middle of the year. Also, as someone mentioned, kids music. Two options I can think of. First would be to have the ability to have a "no random" checkbox and enter a full path to be stored in the database, or add an empty ".norandom" file into the directory and it will be skipped.

Second, some directories should not appear at all, Uploads, Podcasts, TABS etc. Again, exclusions could be entered into subsonic via Settings > Media Folders, there can be an exclusion section, or again, put a ".exclude" file in the directory and it won't even be indexed.

As I said, both of these are show stoppers for me, because I don't want to add separate /mp3/Artists, /mp3/Collections, /mp3/Classical directories as media folders, otherwise things are not laid out properly.

I'd like to see this in the next release so we can finally put an end to this.

Upvote and strongly seconded. I have a synchronization app that adds a _SYNCAPP hidden folder to the root of a given sync folder, for me this ends up adding a _SYNCAPP entry for each library folder. I've tried workarounds from old forum threads such as the subsonic_exclude.txt method, but nothing works.

It would seem this would not be a difficult fix. Really would like to see this feature added.

Instead of configuring a single media folder for /mp3, point one at /mp3/Artists, then others at /mp3/Collections, /mp3/Xmas, etc. You can then disable the ones you don't want, and users can also limit their view to a single one if they wish.

What really needs to happen is for Subsonic to properly honor those settings throughout - If I select the "Classical" media folder in the user interface, it shouldn't show random selections from anywhere else. If I disable a media folder, it shouldn't be included in the total count summary shown at the bottom of the left side frame.

I also miss this function, e.g. if I want to chose a top-level folder Music but exclude the sub-folder "unsorted tracks" from it, then I should have the option not just to "add" media folder but also to "exclude" media folders!

Yes, a thousand times this. I still don't understand why this feature was ever removed.
