Select speaker ouput (jukebox)

Postby bluetooth » Wed Aug 06, 2008 7:46 pm

I'd like to suggest having a jukebox mode where the remote subsonic could play songs on the server side.

There are many ways to implement this, but one way might be to allow an admin to select local/remote/both for speakers. This would require playing the server side, so if too difficult I would be thrilled with an either/or scenario instead of both; but both would be nice.

Thanks for listening Sindre!

Thanks for the reply. Not quite what I'm looking for. I do all kinds of remote takeover stuff already, I'm very familiar with that. Let me give my specific example:
I have a server in the recroom that plays through speakers in the recroom and also to speakers in the backyard. I'd like to use my laptop to be able to control the song selection and volume for the outside speakers.

I have tried remote control, and I'm okay with the stops and starts, but the kids can't use it, it just isn't solid enough.

So allowing Subsonic to play from the server is the perfect solution for this type of problem. BTW, I have tried Jinzora, but it is terribly slow. Subsonic is very quick and a much better interface IMO.

I think the proposed jukebox solution will suit your needs. It will be something like this:

1. Each player in Subsonic will have a new setting, "Jukebox mode (Use server's audio device)".
2. If enabled, the music will be played directly on the server, and not streamed anywhere.
3. There will be a new authorization role, so that only selected users are allowed to use the jukebox mode.

I'm not sure if it will be possible to control the volume thru Subsonic, but I'll look into that.

That is absolutely perfect Sindre! Thank you! I hope the volume control is included, that would completely eliminate the need to walk downstairs to tweak the volume on the receiver.

Just wanted to add I hope the playlist reset bug can be overcome. I guess that means an external player on the server side.
