[bug] status page - bandwidth being used

Postby BloodyIron » Wed Jan 01, 2014 10:48 pm

On the status page it reports my bandwidth way too high. It reports 5000kbps-7500kbps when I'm maybe using 1/10th of that. I also know this is not possible as my upload bandwidth can't even handle such performance.

It should be more clear, but if you divide the number you see by 8, you should get a more realistic number.

I'm familiar with bit and byte conversion. I'm strictly talking bit rate here, as bandwidth (network) is almost never measured in bytes. Furthermore video rates are measured in bits, not bytes, even considering the transcoding that subsonic does.

That being said, my router is reporting that I am actually pulling 3.5-4.5mbit from one video stream when I set the video bitrate to 1500kbps (at the player controls). I suspect it may be due to buffering, but I'm unsure on the best way to throttle upload bandwidth. This is way higher than I was anticipating.

It might be doing something that it is not supposed to be doing, but the kpbs you put is a quality limit, not a bandwidth limit (over time they are rougly the same though). It probably is just a buffering thing. If you let it go for a minute it should calm down as it reaches a buffer limit.

The content I'm watching is very long, so I suspect it will use a lot of bandwidth for a long time. I also suspect it's just playback bitrate limit, not actual network limit as I had anticipated.

So the issue is that I have no way of throttling/limiting/controlling how much bandwidth subsonic uses to buffer content to users.

I tried setting the limit on downloads/uploads but that does not appear to impact bandwidth used when buffering audio/video.

I really want to see the ability to control network bandwidth, so that I can ensure my subsonic instance does not cause problems for other things I'm running. Total max bandwidth in either direction, and per user bandwidth too would be valuable.
