Audio HTML5 Web player?

Postby aarobc » Wed May 14, 2014 7:13 pm

Would it be possible to instead of using the flash player for audio playback, use HTML5?
This should be added at least as an option, as it would also open up a lot more customization for streaming options (eg. opus, ogg). I know there are third party html5 players, but it's obnoxious to install software when I'm on various different machines throughout the day, and sometimes not even an option (eg. at the library).

I think this should be pretty easy to implement, if I knew where the files were I might try setting it up myself, but I know nothing of java.

Yes it would be awesome if HTML5 was supported instead (/as well ) as Flash.. Flash is dying and needs to (and will) just go away, but it will be a long and painful death.. HTML5 is the future and needs to be supported for both audio as well as video modes. Most Android OS's no longer supports Flash and even with the Flash patches Chrome no longer will use it.. Things like the Boat browser just are not stable (or is it maybe the Flash hack??) and are not good options..

The problem with your app is that I don't trust it with the credentials to my subsonic home server.

I wonder how serious that comment about credentials was, though. With CORS-based connectivity (Cross-Origin), one can load a page page, then enter credentials to authenticate and use a service on another, with the server of the original page ever knowing. This is exactly what I do with SubFire at http://p.subfireplayer.net/ - there is no point where the credentials are ever sent to subfireplayer.net. I do not 'proxy' the service, you are talking directly to your server, with the network itself being the only middleman. I have no idea where your server is, what your login is, or anything else, nor do I care.

I presume Jamstash works the same way?

Yes, this concept is relatively new to the web and not everybody is aware it can happen, especially as for years the security systems of browsers explicitly blocked such a feature. It is, however, a GREAT feature. I have written web-only clients for Flickr, Picasaweb, and am playing with coding a simple 'shopping list' front for Trello, all without ever writing a single line of server-side code.

I'm not sure when it was added, but there is now an html5 audio player, but it seems you have to totally disable your browser's flash plugin to get it (if I tell chrome or opera to use click to play or block plugins by default subsonic still tries to use the flash player, I have to disable the flash plugin completely).

http://imgur.com/IEhePxl (as you can see flash is disabled and right clicking the player shows that flash isn't being used)

would be nice if there was an option to force the html5 player in the settings :)
