Installing Subsonic has destroyed my server

Postby futureboy » Wed Aug 20, 2014 11:37 pm

I set up Subsonic 7-8 months ago and used it for about 1 month, then stopped.

A few months later I noticed my monthly traffic log to my server was something like 100GB.... because of requests that were being relayed from my server, thanks to Subsonic.

I removed Subsonic weeks ago and shut down all HTTP, but even now when I turn on HTTP again, within a few seconds I'll see my server logs getting slammed.

It's really sad how much damage using Subsonic has done to my web presence. I'm hoping these spam/adbots will eventually realize I'm not redirecting requests anymore (the log is reporting nothing but 404's now), but they keep coming....

You make no sense. What does people spamming your server have to do with subsonic. Considering no one else has had anything even remotely similar it probably has nothing to do with subsonic

All I know is that I never had this issue before Subsonic. I assumed that after 30 days of trial'ing subsonic it turned your server into a relay for ads?

In any case even though subsonic is gone, I'm still suffering from the consequences of having used it.

No it does not and no you are not lol. That is some weak evidence that a month after you install something you start having trouble so it's the fault of what you installed over a month ago.

That's good to know.

I think the reason this happened, according to my ISP, is because I configured the Apache Proxy to pretty much allow anyone to redirect requests through my server. Once some crawler found that out, it's been attempting to exploit it ever since. It would be great if the documentation might have a caveat about this for newer Apache users.

Interesting. What option did you set that allows that? I didn't even know you could do that.

I have been using Subsonic for years now and nothing like that has happened to my server. I even host multiple domains for other ppl and no issues close to what is described. Subsonic rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This would be caused by trying to set up Apache as a reverse proxy and leaving the Proxy requests to On.

I did that once and had people nailing it within 24 hours.
