I don't use it at all and it takes up screen real estate on my portrait monitor (making me side scroll for many screens.

You can already do this: Settings->Personal-> Show what others are playing and show chat messages. Remove the checkbox on these, and the right side chat panel will disappear.

I thought it had an auto-hide feature too at one point, where you have to hover over the side for it to pop out.

With this option you can get the panel to not render, but the space is still reserved. I would like the middle area to expand to fill the space if the chat area is disabled.
