Players - revisited

Postby bluetooth » Sun Feb 08, 2009 3:17 pm

I'd like to re-state again the unnecessary complexity in defining players by IP address. I logon to subsonic with a single ID from my various internal PC's and external sources, and after a recent check I had over a dozen players configured (again).

I was looking because I was trying to reset the player back to an external player from the internal player, but the change wasn't recognized. Near as I can tell, I was configuring the 'wrong' player.

People don't want to worry about IP addressses.

I'd like to say again, players should tied to user ID's. If you need more granularity than that, then use more user id's.

Thanks for listening.

I agree with Bluetooth for the most part. The only issue I have with having it 100% based on username is that many of us have a guest user account that is used for people without a specific ID and password.

I saw in another post that anonymous access was going to be added in Subsonic 3.7. If so then I think at that point it might make sense to make it ID specific for all IDs except the anonymous one

I don't understand your comment regarding a guest account.

I have a guest account and that account uses the flash player.

My ID's:
Guest
HTPC (uses different screen res, and is actually where subsonic lives)
MusicLocal
MusicRemote
Kitchen (want to use the internal player instead of external)

I just don't see how having multiple players provides any more control, in my opinion, it only introduces unnecessary confusion and complexity.

My point about the Guest account is that I often have more then one user logged in as Guest and they each have their own playlist going.

I would be OK with assigning a default "player" to them (external or flash) but I wouldn't want to force them all to have the same playlist just because they are logged in under the same account.

But now you have a guest that will have changing player settings. I don't see how this is an enhancement.

BTW, in my subsonic environment, each simultaneous guest acct has it's own unique playlist.

Agreed, and i think that is why the need for the anonymous account that is being worked on for the next version.

Same for me, which is why i do not want to restrict it to one playlist/player per user id.

That is definitely a feature if you're looking to create a music service for a bunch of anonymous guest users. Not sure how popular that scenario is, but multiple players does handle that.

I only use subsonic for people I know, but that's me.

I would have to say this should be an option at a minimum. For people that use subsonic the way I use it, identifying players by IP rather than userid is anything but a feature. I actually get calls from friends I have convinced to use subsonic because their player settings are 'lost'.

This may not offer much germane to your conversation, but I have just posted a quick config for Subsonic running on a host with Apache here, and one net result of this is that all users will be coming to the Subsonic app from localhost - 127.0.0.1 - no matter what IP they're actually coming from. Perhaps that approach might assist.

I'm mostly pathetic with code type stuff these days, but I'll definitely take a look. Thanks for posting that!

It would be nice to have a per-user setting, or per-site option of limiting user(s) to a single IP.

I agree with you jonathanroz - there is room for both. For me and the few people that I've created accounts for, having a per-login playlist makes the most sense.

However, I have a general login I use for a family website that automatically logges the user in when they click on the link. They don't worry about login to subsonic. In this scenario a per-ip playlist makes the most sense. It would be very easy to implement both. Simply have an option in the user settings to allow multiple players.
