I know this has been covered partly by another post. But I figured I would throw it in it's own thread so it gets a little more attention.

I would like to see Subsonic include a UPNP server. If that server follows the DLNA standard then even better.

I know that really doesn't fit in with the browser based media player that subsonic is, but this would be a great step towards making subsonic a one stop shop media sharing application.

I use my Playstation 3 to stream movies and music through my home theater. Using the PS3 web browser is a pain to say the least compared to using the Media Server Browser software that is included with the PS3. This is why I have resulted to using UShare for sharing media within my home and subsonic for anything outside the home. But anyway. You really make it easy to set subsonic up, easier than some of the upnp software that I have seen. Since it is so easy to setup subsonic plus the additional functionality that subsonic provides over a basic upnp server I think you would start seeing a much larger install base if you were to include upnp server in subsonic. Every xbox and PS3 has a upnp server browser. That's a pretty large potential user base.

But anyway. I really like subsonic a lot. I have tried other solutions and this is defiantly the best that I have seen. Keep up the good work.

Agreed.

I have previously looked for an open-source UPnP implementation in Java, but didn't find anything. Any info is welcome.

Implementing UPnP support from scratch sounds like a lot of work, and is not something I'd like to do.

Thanks,
Sindre

any update on upnp support?

Postby hoban » Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:41 pm

I too would *love* to see UPnP support in the subsonic server package. I have struggled quite a bit trying to find a decent UPnP server package for Linux over the last year and while I have a working solution (fuppes), I'd really rather not run two services to share the same content. If I could use only subsonic, I'd be very pleased.

The competition is ahead on upnp/dlna

Postby hoban » Thu Feb 03, 2011 5:32 pm

The following headline from today's news:
"Skifta Becomes First Software Application to Receive DLNA Certification"
Not to mention UPnP/DLNA support has been available since December.
http://blog.skifta.com/2010/12/skifta-b ... s-arrived/
I think that if subsonic doesn't get upnp/SLNA support soon, it's missing a huge opportunity that the big boys are going to seize.

+1 so much.

This would expand the possibilities of this already awesome program.

Does the main developer do everything on his own? Does anyone else contribute to the development?

Looks like there is a possible java library available.

Cling

And apparently Jinzora (a program similar to subsonic) uses Cling to translate UPNP into its own API.

This is definitely something that should be done for subsonic.

Here is the jinzora upnp source

One day if I'm feeling especially crazy I might do it.
