it would be great to have a text string somewhere unobtrusive in the interface that says something like "currently x users online", which the admin can turn on or off. like a small version of the "status" tab.

it seems noone else would find this feature usefull, what a freak of nature I am^^

edit: of course, its summer and all, but I still hope I'm not the only one who likes to fiddle with his server at night and posts some ideas that flash by.

What counts as "online"? I never logout, nor do really any of my users. When I go to my subsonic address it just automatically logs me in because I "remember me" or whatever the checkbox is. How would a user go "offline"? Is leaving my tab open but not playing anything for 12 hours while I have dinner, go to bed, shower, considered "online"? Doing such a thing would make the server see my computer hitting the page every couple of minutes when it tries to refresh the area where it shows who is currently playing something. It seems this is a much larger issue than simply inserting a few lines of code where the very concept of online needs to be discussed and defined. Currently it does show in the main frame when people have played something in the past hour.

There must already be some updating/refreshing going on automatically since it shows current information in the "Now Playing" area on the right side of the screen. As it stands now, if a user hasn't played a song for a while, it shows the last song they played and how many minutes ago (within an hour) that they played that track.

What might be useful is for users to automatically be logged out after a certain period of inactivity. In this case, current number of users online is a meaningful statistic, since inactive users would be logged out.

I really don't like this idea. I don't want to have login repeatedly. I like that my cookie keeps me logged in. It's creating more problems to solve a very minor issue in which it's obviously easy enough to see how many users are online. Just count the number of people you see in the list on the right.

well, most would agree this should not be counted as online when using the data for this aplication.
but even not playing anything for 1 hour would be enough to be considered offline (or you could also say "x users active"), since like aphuey said theres already data gathered and processed about this.

and since subsonic counts long songs, eg mixes that are 30 min long as "user has played song x 30 min ago" this would also be practical even for mixes (under 1 hour mixes only i think.
and as it stands, the "user is playing song x minutes ago" goes away after 60 minutes. having a little text somewhere (with option to disable it in settings) which sums up every user that is still shown in the "active pane" would not be hard.
i thinks its more a design problem, since this would kind of show duplicate stats. maybe an option for admin to either show the small stats version ("x users active") or the big one (well known^^)
think small screens and phones, maybe that would be practical, or maybe just a list of names instead of the "active users" pane without the current song and cover (again, selectable in settings).

logging out should not be enforced just to gather statistics, as its really a pain to constantly log in again.
