Subsonic Roku Channel

Postby EricAtUNC » Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:29 pm

It would be great if there was a Subsonic channel for the Roku. Over at the Roku forums, they have some private channels in testing, but it seems they all require the music to be loaded via a web server. Since Subsonic is already http based, wouldn't it be rather easy to be able to create a channel?

I'd like to second this request. A Subsonic Roku channel would be a killer app. I'm a relatively new Roku user, and compared to other small DVP's it is terrible at streaming audio from your home network. As the OP indicated, I'd presume due to the use of HTTP by Subsonic that a channel could be created fairly easily?

Unfortunately I have zero experience in dev work like this, so I can only speculate.

Hey guys,

Create a new player in Subsonic as "External player". Let's say this is player 7. Then create a preset on your Soundbridge as

[A1 Name:] Subsonic stream
[URL:] http://192.168.1.102:4040/stream?player=7

Obviously, change the IP, port and player number as necessary. Then point your Roku to Preset A1 and add some music to play to player 7 in Subsonic.

Verified. You MUST use the player number, not the name you may have given it, and also be patient..the music isn't instant, it takes a few seconds to begin playback on my Roku. 8)

I just got a standalone roku unit. How do I enter Soundbridge info? I've looked in the Roku settings and Channel Store, but don't see anything about Soundbridge. Is this only for these units: http://soundbridge.roku.com/soundbridge/index.php

Correct. Roku Soundbridges are music renderers, but not what the OP is describing (a channel). We also want a Roku Digital Video Player channel for Subsonic. :)

I too would LOVE to have a Roku channel. Anyone have any ideas where to start to create one?

You can grab the SDK from here. They use a different scripting language but it's pretty easy to pick up. Also, applying for a developer key is pretty easy and straightforward:

Coming soon: SubsonicTV for Roku

Postby jnath » Sat Apr 02, 2011 5:36 pm

We will soon be releasing SubsonicTV, a Subsonic client for the Roku digital video player. The player is being developed in a partnership between JNC Ventures and Musiclouds.

If you would like to be notified when SubsonicTV is released, click here and add your email address to our list.

We are also seeking beta testers. If you are interested in beta testing, please understand that this is for the purposes of ensuring that we release a solid product. In order to do so we need people who are willing to commit to taking the time to thoroughly test the unreleased product and report any issues encountered in an accurate way, including the steps needed to reproduce bugs.

Testers who provide substantive feedback will receive a free license of SubsonicTV and a $10 credit for licensing the Subsonic Server. We expect the testing process to begin in late April.

We're now releasing alphas. Basic functionality like cover art, playing songs, etc works if you browse by artist a-z.

The first release candidate (RC1) for SubsonicTV v1.0 is now available. SubsonicTV for Roku lets you enjoy your music & MP4 video (new!) collection on your TV without uploading to the cloud.

An RC comes after the beta period and before final release. We think we’re done, but with hundreds of users, a variety of configurations, it’s possible we’ve missed something. So if you haven’t tested SubsonicTV yet, now is the time!

Things to keep in mind:

* Directions for installing/using SubsonicTV are here.
* If you think you've found a bug, post it on our forum (no registration required).
* If any known issues crop up, you’ll be able to find them here.

Happy testing!

FYI, SubsonicTV has been officially published in the Roku Channel Store, in two editions, Pro and LITE, both allow you to stream your library to your Roku, the PRO version implements the Subsonic music discovery features, search, browsing, create playlists etc. You can install direct from here:

https://owner.roku.com/add/SubsonicTV
Clicking the above link will add SubsonicTV PRO to your Roku account, but you must subscribe in order to use it. Visit the channel store, then exit to update after adding.

https://owner.roku.com/add/SubsonicTVLITE
Clicking the above link will add SubsonicTV LITE to your Roku account, visit the Channel Store and then exit to update.

or visit http://www.SubsonicTV.com for more info.
