Subsonic web layout

Hi,

Being a web developer myself, I get annoyed pretty fast on layout and design that could be better, professional deformity as we call it!

I don't like the use of the frames. It has several disadvantages:
- It looks kinda messy
- There is way too much information visible
- It's harder to make good looking skins

I installed the SubAir application yesterday, which I like a lot! The interface is much cleaner, less information being thrown to the user, etc...

It would be possible to make a similar layout, where current playlist, the whole collection, etc.. aren't always visible at the same time. Tabs work great for this.

To make the player keep player, you'll have to use ajax, which has many advantages.
- Code is cleaner, if you use it to retrieve JSON data
- Might work a little faster
- You can improve usability and add some really cool effects, such as fading text etc...

I know it's very easy to rant about something how bad it is, while not having time to do things myself :)
Fact is, Subsonic is not bad, it's great! I hope these constructive suggestions might help you make Subsonic even better!

Web 2.0 feeling would be a must

I have been trying a lot of soft/scripts to organize my audio mess, and so far so good I would say with subsonic.

My only concern is that altougth it is web centric (which is the best choice), I (we ?) feel that the interface is kind of poor, and that's mainly because AJAX is not used in all this.

Something that definitely explain where I am sitting right now: reorganize the order in the bottom playlist is tuff, a drag & drop would be quite useful.

i also agree

would be cool if the webfrontend is more customizable.

i wish a music library is more like winamp/itunes or like grooveshark.com

the play-controls could be like on subAir.

Could you not knock up a design, let us see how you would like Subsonic to look? A picture paints a thousand words blah blah blah.

Could be the catalyst the Dev needs to redesign :D

Peace

CR.

I agree that there are quite a few problems with the current web interface. I'm trying SubAir to see if I like that better. Ideally I'd love to see the new interface take advantage of html5 and <audio> at least for vorbis transcodes. And to take advantage of local storage (or possibly a newer Flash feature) like YouTube now does so when you reload the page your YouTube video is still loaded.

not the best looking mockup, just copy and pasted somethings together in 5min, but maby it can inspire someone to make a better one :)

Hey guys I completely agree with your arguments that the UI and layout could be improved.

I just made a request for moving the code versioning system from Sourceforge (Subversion) to Github (Git) to allow us web developers and software engineers to assist making this project amazing!

http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3521

Just to start...
* interface
* HTML 5
* indexing improvement (I can't get it to index my servers NAS shares with music now so I'd like to start off by contributing some code to support this)

I like the interfaces and functionality of sites like these, its nice to be able to make changes to things and not loose the song that is playing.

Using frames is not only clutter-bound, but just looks ugly, it looks unprofessional.
Now don't get me wrong, I love subsonic, it beats the pants off of sockso as far as functionality and ability to customize my users.

Keep up the good work, and here's to hoping future updates look a little more like this or atleast implement some of it! :D
