OS X: run in background

First, thank you for a great app.

I've tried to run it in the background via login options in OS X. Even so, when starting up, this dialog box appears. When you click "hide", the dialog box minimized to the dock. When I close the dialog box, (via the standard red button in the open window) the app stays open, which is what I want to get as a result. It would be great to have a "run in the background" option, and preferences including this option accessible via standard application preferences in an application pull-down menu.

would love to see it run in the finder/status bar! if not, at least we should be able to hide it on startup....
