There does not seem to be a definitive guide explaining how to upgrade from stable releases or beta without losing server setting, folder structure settings, comments and cover art.

Would appreciate those of you who have had both good and bad experiences to post detailed upgrading guides, fixes and workarounds.

I'm sure the community at large would be very very grateful.

huh? i was under the impression that settings are already preserved when upgrading...

If you're upgrading an existing Subsonic installation, you don't have to uninstall the old version first. In any case, the existing Subsonic settings are preserved.

Yes, under Windows installation it does tell you that settings are preserved. But for Mac or Linux there is no such information I have been able to find.

I personally would hate to lose hours of setup work on my Ubuntu Server by upgrading. This happened already once just by deciding to change the folder layout for my music, which caused all the page comments to dissappear as well and cover art to go missing.

If you find the info I missed, please let me know

Debian/Ubuntu Linux upgrade from SS 4.1 to 4.2:

1. Stop server.
2. Remove (or backup*) directory '/var/subsonic/jetty' ('/<subsonic-server>/jetty').
3*. Backup '/etc/default/subsonic' and '/usr/share/subsonic/subsonic.sh'.
4. Upgrade package.
5*. Replace new '/etc/default/subsonic' and '/usr/share/subsonic/subsonic.sh' with an old copy.
6. Restart server.
7. Login as admin and check settings. See: 'Advanced/Downsample command' and 'Transcoding' (new 'Recommended configuration' is a right from 'Save' and 'Cancel' buttons).
8*. Restart server (if changed some settings).

my biggest complain about Subsonic is that the documentation is terrible.

Port # and memory allocation size revert back to defaults, and information such as "newest" albums is lost. Minor annoyances but annoyances nonetheless.

I just upgraded from 4.1 to 4.2 on Windows 7 (without uninstalling 4.1) and the port forwarding setting was replaced with the default port 80.
