Finally! I thought of something I would like to see added!

First, I want to say I have been wracking my brain trying to think of something to add to this software. You have NOT made it easy, it has just about everything I could want already.

However, today I was listening to my music at work (thats one reason I have it so I can stream my music to work, but I also use it as a media server at home) and some music came up that I didn't even know I had. I did not like it at all and wished I could delete it, would never remember by the time I got home.

So, I wish you would add a permission that allowed a user to delete tracks, albums, or whole artists. For safety, maybe it would zip the deleted stuff up and put them in a special "recycle bin" folder then delete the original folder. Then an administrator could check what was in that folder and see the archives of deleted stuff right from the main application. I would like to be able to do all of my administration stuff from Subsonic.

Also, with the ability to process cover art embedded in ID3 tags, is there a possibility of an option to go through the entire collection and put the folder.jpg file into the song's ID3 tag and remove the file from the disk? Maybe even an option to go the other way too, take it out of the ID3 tag and make a folder.jpg on the disk. That way people who like it either way can "have it their way".

Thanks for the amazing software!

Hi Tekzel and thanks for your kind feedback.

I've added it to my list of potential new features. To be honest, I'm a bit reluctant to add features which alter the user's music collection (in particular deletion and batch changes).

I just installed iTunes on my machine, and must have pressed the wrong buttons / selected the wrong options, because it totally rearranged and f***ed up my entire music collection. Luckily, I've got a backup :-)

I know I would be reluctant to install a media server with a theoretical possibility that a malevolent hacker could screw up my music collection.

Anyone else got opinions on this?

Cheers,
Sindre

Hi Sindre, thanks for the response.

I can definitely understand that concern, that is why I suggested the "recycle bin" option where after successfully zipping up the stuff to be deleted it then removes the original location. This would require just going in to the location where the archive is stored and deleting it to do the permanent removal.

Another option would be to just have the option to "flag for deletion". An admin can then see what was flagged, and by how many and so on. So the deletion and recycle bin happens on a logical level in the database, and not on the actual file system. I for once would feel much safer that way. For the actual deletion to happen, I'm not sure. Maybe a double secured, only admin accessible and well hidden "delete flagged items" could be implemented.

If the admin has direct access to the file system by sitting in front of the computer the media is on, they can delete the files that way instead of through the Subsonic interface.

I think a simple "flag for deletion" would be suitable, and have this option only available to the admin or someone with special privileges.
