VIDEO_TS VOB file transcoding

I have a lot of DVDs in my media collection stored as simply an extracted VIDEO_TS folder with the VOB/IFO files. It would be nice to be able to transcode these videos somehow. I tried setting up a rule to transcode the VOB files and tried to play the individual files, but I just got an error in the flash player: "Video not found or access denied: /steram?pathUtf8Hex=...." So it seems as if ffmpeg is not able to transcode the file, at least using the default recommended command string.

1. You have to log in as admin
2. Go to SETTINGS > TRANSCODING
3. Add a new line:
Name: vob > flv
from: vob
to: flv
Step 1 ffmpeg -ss %o -i %s -b %bk -s %wx%h -ar 44100 -ac 2 -v 0 -f flv -
4. save
5. go to SETTINGS> PLAYER
6. aktivate the the transcoding you want to and save
7. add ".vob" to SETTINGS>GENERAL >Video mask
Works fine, but theres no DVD-Options to chose other languages or subtitels

I get the same error, using the settings guisekeeper posted.

This is on a Windows 7 host.

I even got a newer version of ffmpeg but the same result.

This is just an fyi, I will batch convert the files later.

Thanks for the info. I think I hadn't enabled the transcode setting for the player before, missed that step. I also was using the default "Step 1" string that other video types use. Looks like the "-async 1" setting is the difference. It seems there is no way to select a start time on the player when transcoding VOB files though. But at least they're playing now. Thanks again for your help.

I noticed that Jeffdgr8 mentioned "-async 1", the string that I saw in GuiseKeeper's post only has
ffmpeg -ss %o -i %s -b %bk -s %wx%h -ar 44100 -ac 2 -v 0 -f flv -

I used:
ffmpeg -ss %o -i %s -b %bk -s %wx%h -ar 44100 -ac 2 -async 1 -v 0 -f flv -

But had no luck.

hi, guys.
try this: - dont change your transcoding settings in subsonic
- rip your dvd to a single .vob-file.
- copy file to your subsonic video folder
- rename file from .vob to .mpg

I haven't tried this, but I agree at least in theory that it would work. However, the OP already has extracted VOBs. I don't know how many discs the OP has ripped, but I can tell you that if I had even 1/4 of my DVD collection ripped to HDD in that fashion, I certainly wouldn't want to re-rip them.

I do have some DVDs stored in ISO format, as another application I use (PS3 Media Server) is able to open these files and play the titles, as if it "mounts" the image (it does not actually mount it to the OS). I would be interested to see the OP's request implemented, as the ability to open and play an ISO file would be very easy to accomplish at that point.

This rule does work for .vob files It's perfect only....I can't skip through the video Is there any way to fix this?

Thank you for the instructions on how to do this. I think that this should be part of the basic functionality of subsonic since it doesn't even require any kind of hacks to accomplish, and frankly it works very well.

Did anybody ever come up with a way to change the start times with vob files?

Thanks, I have no idea how/why a new transcoding line is needed but it works great !

The next step would be to have Subsonic be able to play a video_ts folder directly by reading the .ifo...
