I emailed the developer about this issue a while back...

"The main reason Subsonic uses folder structure rather than tags is that many people don't have properly tagged music collections."

Still would be nice to have the option right?

This is a poor argument... the ability to use either would be no more difficult than implementing tag-based structure. And for some, using tags is the only way to sort out compilations and multi-genre artists.

If your seriously too lazy to properly tag your music, then u shouldnt be using a music server! nevertheless we should have the option of tags or folder structure. Dont cater to the lazy, cater to the people who care about thier music. just my 2 cents!

me personaly, none of my new music goes onto my server or backup until its properly tagged. One folder conatins originals, other folder contains only 256vbr (to keep the levels equal).
I take pride on my library being organized, and we should be rewarded with the ability to use our tags.

peace

Yeesh. I don't allow music into my library (and ultimately Subsonic) until it's properly tagged; genre and all. I never really thought about this feature until my users started asking me if it was possible. I've had more than one person ask how they could view my library by genre.

My first inclination as an alternative would be to just make massive playlists using Foobar. Haven't tried it yet though.

is there any news on this? I'm also looking for a way to sort by genre! or other tags -but genre is the most important for me!
