Advanced Search

Postby Qbix » Sat Jul 02, 2011 12:56 pm

Maybe good to add an advanced search function.
So if you have like for instance two folders:

1. Music
2. Clips

You can define that you want to search for ex. 'Beyonce' only in the Clips folder.

Maybe even more definitions like:
- Size
- Date
- Extension
- Folder
- Rating
- etc..

Therefore I'm still on 4.01, the search function was changed in the following versions, because I need to generate playlists from selected genres

Having an 'advanced search' feature has been requested tons of times. Since people create new threads instead of searching the forum, I feel forced to copy and paste the same reply in a handful of threads to reach people subscribing to the topic.

I've just added an 'advanced search' interface to my Subsonic mod, see viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9777&p=50566#p50566.

It allows for combining some twenty different criteria when searching for tracks, browsing all results, and adding all of them for playback. The mod is documented at http://dilerium.se/musiccabinet/.

yep right there, but what happen to the ppl that just want to search the collection by genre? - without installing major mods to make that happen!? i played around with music cabinet, but it generally does very little for my needs (maybe beside genre search ;) )
dont get me wrong, it is a great (but major) mod! all good for ppl wanting all this - i JUST like to search my stuff by genre!!! no nerdy other functions needed at the moment! call me simple (or whatever you like) - i dont need to change half my storage software to get one simple piece of functionality!? or do i????
unfortunately i dont have a idea about writing code to do., but changing everything to music cabinet cant be the solution for a rather simple prob!!!!!

it is at the point to really annoy me this days. one would think that somebody here could just get that piece of (often requested) improvement done!
i am close to start taking classes, in order to do that myself eventually. how hard can it be? take subsonic... take kplaylist... join the needed parts of code....!!!

This is basically the code I wrote for this function:
https://github.com/hakko/musiccabinet/c ... 400abd0a30
https://github.com/hakko/subsonic/commi ... 7effa4a72b

Feel free to re-write and add it to standard Subsonic (and make your new code public too, to conform with the GPL license).

It's not as straight-forward as one could hope, though. Sindre has made some design choices in Subsonic (to keep the install simple) that makes this harder to achieve in version 4.6 / 4.7. It's part of the reason why I prefer to use PostgreSQL for storing metadata. It adds an extra step to the installation, but it offers much greater power once it's up and running.

first of all sorry - i didnt try to attack you (or anybody else for that matter). i am frustrated often enough, because i cant do it myself to begin with. i very much appreciate the work of everybody able to do so!!!!
and yes, if and when i get to the stage to create sth useful, trust me - i will share it!
as said before, i tried musiccabinet, it is kinda nice - but way overdone for what i am looking for at this point with subsonic (and - i did that at some point before as well - my cudos to sindre).
so, without getting into a 'pissing contest' which you would win anyway... and i understand the postgresql idea also (to be fair not really ;) i used mysql/ lamp/ wamp etc before and it worked for my needs).
anyway, as said before i try to figure stuff out at the moment! i also spend time on learning more about the whole programming end - no shit!
some stuff i just dont get - like subsonic vs kplaylist - looks like very identical to me (in terms of what we want and what we get). it is both open source. kplaylist was long my fav, guess it still is (still have the computer going with it) but seems to be on a standstill with development at the moment.
ss has many things 'out of the box' going for it, unfortunately also major lags, like the genre thing....
kplaylist seems to be not really to be developed at all at the moment :(
anyway - best out of both? would be great! pref. with an easy install routine?

kPlaylist and Subsonic uses completely different technology stacks, though. So you could take an idea from one project and add into the other, but you can't just move code straight between them.

I'm basically writing the streaming music server I want to have at work, and then I share it with the rest of the world in case somebody else would find it useful. It will always be a niche product but it's quite fun to write something that fits my needs and to add features I haven't found in any other solution.

I don't think it would be very hard to write a "genre search" for Subsonic for example once you're familiar with Java and databases (that'll require a little bit of work on your part, though).
