Surprised I could not find another thread about it using the search function.

As silly as this may sound, it is the #1 issue I deal with when doing technical support for my users.

I know its easy to tell people its case sensitive, but it also cant be that to at least make this optional.

Yep it is bit of a pain As most people tend to just capitalise the first letter if at all I just add two users for each one.
e.g. dave & Dave which catches most problems but it is far from ideal.

I'll admit when creating my username I capitalized the first letter and experienced this problem.

should be an option if it's possible.
I like the fact it's case sensitive, allows more play with usernames.
