Sort by Genre request *Again*

I find it silly that such a great player doesnt utilize tags.
seriuosly dont cater to the lazy, and people who dont tag thier music are lazy.
Tags are there for a reason, so lets use them.
This is the main feature thats missing, and IMO folder structure is useless and ugly.
Lets make this a top priorirty over all other requests.

if you have everything tagged properly, isn't it trivial to sort your folders the way you'd like them to be (e.g. by genre first)? check out musicbrainz picard, mp3tag, or foobar2000.

if it really bugs you, check out audiogalaxy.

For music players nowadays, its pretty standard to sort music by tags over folder structure... subsonic is behind on this.

IMHO, it IS pretty trivial to sort your music by genre\artist\album when you can have multiple genres per artist, which will create quite a bit redundant folders. Tags could easily solve this.

eg:
Code: Select all
genre1\ artist1 \album1
genre2\ artist1 \album2

vs:
Code: Select all
artist1 \album1
        \album2

The idea of sorting by genre isn't necessarily for organization sake for me, its for being able to search and traverse my music more efficiently because of my large collection.

And shame on you rubbersoul for suggesting alternative music streaming apps ಠ_ಠ

yeah i agree. it's an outdated way to do things, but it has its advantages, two being ease of implementation and initial flexibility for the user.

i love having my music sorted by artist, and then by album chronologically. this organization method can be done with tags of course, but seldom ever is. nearly every single android music player is based on tags and hardly any support sorting your albums chronologically. some people may like to throw in additional organizational wildcards like separating lp, ep, compilation, single, etc. the best way to provide maximum flexibility is to use tags to sort, and allow the user to customize the sort by those tags (foobar2000 does this); this is particularly powerful when you allow for custom tags and multi-value tags. i do not know of a single android music player that supports this however, as tag-based players simply allow you to browse your library by track, artist, album, or genre (maybe multi-valued). the reason for this, i suspect, is that it would be arduous to code.

by using folder organization, you give control to the user to organize as they please with some limitations (multi-value is one example that you pointed out, another would be switching back and forth between browsing by artist, or by genre, or by decade...). i agree that tags are better, but the fact of the matter is tags aren't implemented, and there are some advantages to using folders. use the tools that are available to you to make the best of the situation. if it is so important, like i said, there are other similar services that offer that sort of support (sorry, haha). telling the developer that this needs to be the number one priority probably isn't going to do anything to sway him one way or another.

I completely understand what you are saying and my music folder organization IS in fact sorted by artist\album; however, I cannot browse by this method due to its size and therefore rely on tags.

Including tags support would not damage the way subsonic runs currently since it can always default to folder structure or even become customizable to use specified tags (like foobar does).

All we're asking for is the ability to be able to use tags... I see no negative consequences other than taking up the developer's time. (though I agree it shouldn't be given top priority)

edit: I noticed that Google Music now allows for Album Artist and Genre support... I love subsonic and am trying to avoid any other service, but this is a pretty important feature.

sorting by genre is very important for me. As I love ska music or any jamacian music, id like to see all my ska artist.
or maybe Im in a punk mood other days, and just want to sift through my punk artists.
folder based structure might be good for small music collection, but for us with large ones, its pretty much useless.
I built my collection for a community of users, all who have different taste. It would be easier for all my users to sort by the genre they like the most.

I cant see any advantage of using folder stucture except laziness, as everything can be achieved with proper tags!

yes, google does do it right, they use tags, however they have a limit of 20,000 songs.....too little for my library.
tried audiogalaxy...sucks ballz....
subsonic is a great app, could be the best, but just useless for me until it gets up to date with this centrury and use a tag based library.

and I disagree, it should be a high priority.
cause sharing music through social networking is sooooo much more important....right?
doubt it
