Download Using Transcode Settings

It would be great if the download function could transcode while streaming the ZIP for download; I store my library as FLAC files, which makes downloading at remote sites a chore over a home ADSL connection.

Just to make sure everyone is on the same page on this request could you confirm.
If you have a flac file (for example), then you would like the option to transcode and download that in another format (eg. mp3)?

I have a few flac file files in my SS library so I thought I would test and see how much compression I could achieve by using the inbuilt zip compression.
Unfortunately the end result was a zip file 2k larger then the original combined flac files :?
Therefore transcoding before downloading seems to be a sensible request so a +1 from me

Yeah, precisely; I would even have a default option for users to download as format (ogg, mp3 etc), and use the existing transcoding chains.

It wouldn't surprise me that the downloaded ZIP file was larger; as far as I can tell, Subsonic is only using the ZIP file as a container for shipping multiple files as one download, not for any compression benefts.

+1 for this.

An additional "Download as MP3" option that transcodes:

- a single file to mp3 before starting download, or...
- all files in the album to mp3 before zipping and starting download

As the transcoding can take a significant period of time on slow or heavily loaded servers, some sort of AJAX style progress indicator prior to download starting would create a better user experience.

 You know? I'm tempted to try implementing this myself. /me downloads Subsonic source.

Another +1.
I'm looking to re-rip my music to FLAC, and this would be a crucial feature.

I would really appreciate this feature.

I have a lot of Flac and Wav-files and the option to transcode them to mp3 when i download them would be awesome.
My car stereo plays mp3s from a USB Flashdrive and transferring a whole playlist transcoded to the flashdrive would make things a lot easier. :D

I know this is bringing up an old thread, but this would be SUPER useful to download transcoded video as well. I store 1080p on my workstation at home but when I'm not at home it would be nice to download the transcoded versions of files when I'm at a Starbucks so that I can play it later when I'm traveling.

Thanks, subsonic is awesome!

Is this feature planned in future versions?

It would come very handy indeed!

+1 download as mp3 [at a configurable bitrate]. I have mostly FLAC at home but mp3 downloads when I'm somewhere else would be great. It looks like the caching feature for the android app already does this though it would be nice to package [zip or tar] transcoded albums.

This would be an excellent addition to the web app.

I know the android app (and DSub) allow this ability natively, but it would be immensely helpful in the webapp too.

I had a thought here. Subsonic does download transcoded versions. That's what it does to play the music on an android. You can/could make a sub folder in your native music folder, and set subsonic to use that folder for it's cache. Then, once you listen to an album, all the mp3s will end up in that folder.

There's also a blue pin next to all the tracks when playing. Maybe that saves them from being "cleaned up" once Subsonic reaches the specified max MB of your music cache. Blue pin
