Handling/Organization of Videos

The music side of subsonic seems to work very well, as it should considering that was its main purpose. I know that video support was just added and I have been enjoying it to some extent. The one part that drives me crazy is the lack of being able to separate music and video well. I have my music and video's in different folders of course and can choose ether my music or video folder. But were it gets really messing is when using any of the random functions. It also messes up Random, Recently added, Top rated, Most played and Recently played display on the home screen.

Also the since the way in which the files names are displayed (blank cover art on the right) rarely can you actually read the name of the file because there is not enough space. Using a typical naming scheme for TV shows, and no there is no way I'm changing it.

Searching is also problematic since again there is no separation between videos and music, you get both audio and video results.

A master switch to switch between "video mode" and "music mode" would be something along the line of a way to at least fix this. Rarely, if ever, I would be interested in both music and videos. Examples are, driving = music only. Party/entertaining = music only. Wanting to watch a video = sitting down to watch a video using a laptop/TV/phone.

An improvement of jwplayer would also be appreciated. I have noticed reading around here there is a newer version. And also there is a newer version of ffmpeg that would be helpful if it was included also.

Sorry if this sounds all negative. I do enjoy what subsonic can do and it does do most of it very well. Thank you for all your hard work Sindre.

I agree with your assessment. I would also like to see a photo library added with better mode segregation between music video abd photo.

All good ideas.

Perhaps it would be better to post these ideas in "Feature Requests."

I appreciate SS and use it every day. I also appreciate all the hard work that goes into the development of Subsonic and I realize that lately Sindre has been focused on the mobile app and the sharing features. At some point, however, I think that it's important that Sindre pay some attention to some of the nagging bugs that have been around for a long time now rather than adding new features. My experience has been that he monitors these forums and tends to be influenced by what he reads here. The more users that voice their opinions here in the forums, the more likley it is that these issues will be addressed.

Thanks for adding your input.

I would also like to see a new section added to the forums devoted solely to reporting and discussing bugs.

Yeah I wasn't sure where to put it. Wasn't sure how much discussion would happen with it. Maybe a mod could move it? Or I'll just re-post it there.

Also, I know this is basically a one person operation but sooner rather then later would be best.

Other solutions are cropping up and it wouldn't be good to loose to people to other programs. IE: http://www.emitapp.com

I have a separate folder set up for my videos, would be nice to be able to separate them out, have a different tree on the left side bar and a check box when searching in the android app or something like that. just something to segregate them out, it hasnt happened yet but when im streaming music while at work i wouldnt want to come across a movie when i hit random all

Exactly why this is needed, with video files in the mix, random all becomes unusable.

Well, your collection of video clips has rapidly grown to include quite a number of costly footage. Make a hand-written list or use a computer spreadsheet to log each video you own: name, price & purchase date.

I already have folders titled "movies", "tv", and "music", it would be great if the dropdown menu in the left sidebar would have universal effects.

I don't use the search very much as I pretty much know where my stuff is. I've got about 4 TB of media available on SS now, but I don't find it hard to keep track of as it's all organized into folders and different subdirectories:

Music - \Artist\Album\Track

Videos - Alphabetical - but could easily be further organized.

Audio Books - Same as Video

Recorded TV - subfolder for each series recorded.

Once a library is organized it's pretty easy to maintain.
