DAAP server

Postby braddyo » Mon Nov 12, 2007 8:09 am

This was suggested just over a year ago, but wasn't really addressed.

Is it possible to include a DAAP server as part of the subsonic package? As Subsonic already indexes the media library, it seems it would be just a little bit more work to include a daap server. Firefly Media Server (used to be mt-daapd) is an open-source project for a daap server.

A daap server would be an awesome addition, as it would allow any media player with daap support (such as iTunes and Rhythmbox) to browse the entire music library without using the web interface... I won't lecture you on the basics, I'm sure you know what it is.

I'll take a look at Firefly Media and the DAAP protocol to see if it's feasible to implement support for it in Subsonic.

I've earlier looked at a similar protocol, UPnP AV, but that looked far too complex.

Thanks,
Sindre

I just wanted to bump this up in support. Subsonic really has everything BUT this.

Great work on Subsonic Sindre!

The only reason I installed it was so that the music library would appear in the shared itunes libraries on all the networked computers. It has a small web-based interface to manage the server (change the server name, create smart playlists, etc) but it doesnt actually stream the music in the web browser.

If you want to listen and browse the music via a web-browser, you want subsonic. If you want to listen to the music through iTunes on any networked machine, you use Firefly. It would be nice if Subsonic also shared the music to Itunes machines as well as via the web browser.

You're gonna need some kind of computer to run anything like subsonic. Some NAS enclosures can do some similar things but even they function like computers (they have low-power processors and what not)

Refreshing this thread, DAAP implementation would be sweet, imagine accessing your subsonic media server from iTunes and similar clients :-)

Roger Kapsi has written a Java DAAP Server library which hopefully should make it feasible to implement. I haven't managed to find his project page (if any) but it's part of the Get It Together source code (GPL).

I know you already have a lot on your hands Sindre, but seeing this in Subsonic 2.0 or similar would be really really sweet.

A DAAP server is a specialized HTTP server, which performs two functions. It sends a list of songs and it streams requested songs to clients ...

+1000 on being able to implement this. I currently use firefly on my WHS to server music to my soundbridge radio and soundbridge. Being able to do this with subsonic would be the best!

Hello,

Has this been implemented in version 4.X? I can't seem to find it.

DAAP

Postby Jmt32 » Sun Nov 14, 2010 2:53 pm

I installed subsonic yesterday- fantastic. After expressing my gratitude for the work done on this project, I have to agree with the folks on this thread. A Daap server would make Subsonic the perfect tool for my needs.

Thanks again, Mr. Mehus.

With Apple's release of AppleTV using the new OS, and the successful jailbreaking of it - adding DAAP server support would complete the circle. Right now, if you want to use APPLETV and listen to your music via iphone, you run Subonic AND iTunes - once DAAP server support is added, iTunes will no longer be required to run, only subsonic.

This seems like a no brainer, but we hear so little from Sindre on the topic, perhaps lining up a group to turn the stalled project FireFly into a DAAP version of subsonic is more likely.
