Click on artist's name, get an album listing

Click on the artist name, get a list of albums by that artist sorted by year. I would rather have that in the left-panel than a list of directories.

I think this is more a function of how your music directories are set up.

Subsonic scans the folder(s) you assign it to look for, then lists the folders based on your indexing preferences.

When you click the name on the left pane you get one drill down into that folder and all the subdirectories or files are listed in the center pane.

So if you order your folders by Artist/(year) Album you'll get this feature.

I personally have mine as Alphabet/Artist/(year) Album, so i had to add each
alphabetical folder individually, but you get the picture..

That may be helpful, unless you already knew all that and were just hoping that subsonic could be written to organize your collection through tagging a la Itunes..
