NON-FLASH Video Player

Postby pismire » Wed Aug 01, 2012 11:46 pm

I apologize if this request has been made/fulfilled previously.

Android JellyBean no longer supports flash.
Sure, one can root the device and get a hacked older version of flash working but, i enjoyed watching my videos from my phone/tablet when on the road... My new phone/tablet can't use the web player.

Would it be possible to add support to some other type of universally accepted player?
I fear flash will eventually go bye bye since it doesn't have the support it once had from top companies.

Hello,

My android phone is a Nexus S and I was able to upgrade it to Jelly Bean OTA. Since I wanted to play my Video on that phone from Subsonic, I found a way of installing Flash on it even if my phone is not rooted. Since everybody is moving away from Flash I think Subsonic should also.

Is there something in the work to replace Flash?

Thanks,

Louis

I have been working on a possible html5 implementation for subsonic video streaming. Its still in the development stages but I have had success using VLC commandline to transcode a video in .ogg format. I then took the streaming link and put it in html5 video tags to watch it in google chrome. The audio and video are out of sync so that is one thing I am working on. If the overhead is minimal and it is easy to add a html5 streaming link in subsonic this just may work. I have a nexus 7 as well so that is what I will be doing testing on.

This does need to be given more focus now that the flash player is being removed from the android app store today. (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/08/14 ... wendesday/) so anyone that wants it now has to get it some place else even if your android version supports it.

I do have flash working in jellybean on my HTC one x but want to get HTML5 going asap.

Sideloading applications on Android has never been hard, whilst a non-Flash based client would be appreciated, Android's shift away from Flash support isn't game-breaking in any sense of the word.

No but it does add more value to a HTML5 video implementation given that a greater and greater number of devices wont be able to get flash without having to install the apk from an untrusted source. While its possible it doesn't mean all users should be expected to do it, plus as future revisions of android get released who knows if the current apk's will even work on them. The other issue is the move from browsers to not support flash, chrome for example :)

I'd be happy if Video support was added to the Android app personally.

JWPLayer, which is used by the web interface of Subsonic, supports HTML5 (including iOS devices) in its most recent versions. Can the JWPlayer and SubSonic code be updated to incorporate this functionality?
