Subsonic Package for Synology NAS

Postby gigon » Thu Dec 01, 2011 1:07 am

Hi folks,
first of all I don't know if this is the right Forum, so please move this Topic to its right Forum if it is wrong here.

I made a Synology .spk Package for simple GUI installation of Subsonic.
It is running very well on my DS 211+ with patters' Java .spk package installed. link
It should be working with all Marvell ARM v5 powered Diskstations on DSM 3.1 or higher.

I still have to fix a few things but I think I can release a first Package tomorrow with further details and all the scripts.

now I've to get some sleep, it is 2 AM here in Germany...

For complete guide, download and support visit:
www.eg-blog.de

good news, the subsonic spk is done =)

Everyone who is able to read german: Post im Synology Forum

All others:
Install this at your own risk!

Create a manual backup to secure your settings and database.
The installation path is /volumeX/@appstore/Subsonic -X is the number of the drive SS is installed to- it can bei accessed via ssh

Minimum System Requirements:
A Synology DiskStation with a mv6282 or mv6281 CPU. What does my NAS have? ->klick
DSM 3.1 or higher
SS Requires up to 150MB RAM on my DS211+ (with 40.000 mp3s) so I recommend not to install this on little "j" DiskStations
Java SE v6 or v7 installed klick

Installation/update guide:
1. download the .spk from here: subsonic4.6_spkv17.spk (see chagelog and update instructions in following posts)
2. login into DSM
3. start the package center (in main menu)
4. select the downloaded .spk and install it
5. choose your destination drive
6. start

The subsonic GUI can be accessed via http://your-NAS-IP:4040 or the icon in the DSM.

After successful install it should look like this:
Image

for the package content and scripts look at my post in the german Synology Forum

If you want to modyfy something be sure you have read this how to from Synology Synology DiskStation Manager 3rd-Party Apps Developer Guide_V2.pdf

This package contains lame and ffmpeg encoder which are licensed under LGPL.

My thaks go out to patters I couldn't have done that without his scripts and tutorials.

Again: Although there is a Backup routine implemented in the upgrade scripts: to be 100% sure please backup your library and settings manually!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask

I've created a blog where the package is maintained from now.
http://www.eg-blog.de/

Further releases will be posted here.
If you got any questions, you can post them on my blog page without registration.

There is a new version of the package with minor changes, to be compatible to the "Community Package Hub".
If you've got spkv17 installed there is no need for an update the changes are just technical.

This is very promising:

Power Architecture Linux - Headless
* e500v2 core

I will give it a try and report.

Thanks very much!

There is a new release (hopefully the last until a new Subsonic release is out)
I have also created a x86 version, but can't test this with my 211+, so if you have an Atom it would be kind to report whether transcoding works or not.
If you have already installed a Subsonic Package you don't have to update. Subsonic itself is completely the same.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I LOVE THIS PACKAGE!! :D

It runs PERFECTLY on my DS 712+! I can't tell you how easy my life is now cuz of this. I had posted a few months ago asking if anyone had a package or something like that for a Synology machine. No one answered, but then a few months later, you put this up. I honestly can't thank you enough. Now I can retire my server and just use my DS 712+. It runs perfectly, and transcodes everything quickly. The Synology actually serves Subsonic faster than my Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM Ubuntu server did.. no lag, no dropped connections, no problems!

Subsonic blows away the Synology DS Audio app.. but I was so worried I wouldn't be able to use it on my Syno.. thanks to this package, I don't have to worry about that anymore! Thank you so much!

What a Merry Christmas for me and my family thanks to you.. now I can play Christmas music through my house straight from my DS 712+. Thanks again!

Hi, thank you for this package, it's really great!!

I just install it on my ds211+ and all works fine except from my iphone with the app "substream". Each time I play a song, the cpu usage raise up to 100% and the player is lagging. The network is not in cause. Is there something to do in subsonic to improve this?

I have a "classic" adsl connection with 128kbits upload.

I have the same problems with my 211+, it is caused by its small (slow) CPU and can't be changed at this moment.
If you are at home (using fast Wifi) you can disable transcoding:
Settings -> Player -> select the Subsonic player -> set maximum Bitrate to "no limit" -> disable the transcoding checkboxes at the buttom -> save
In the iSub app:
Settings->Settings->Maximum audio bitrate: "None"

If you are using mobile networks you will have to figure out if your upload bandwidth is big enough, otherwise you will have to cache the songs you want to listen to. (swipe from left to right on a folder in the iSub App and select cache.)

btw.: I am working on a new package which will include the latest version of ffmpeg (0.9.1).

ok thank you for the answer! You're doing a great job, keep going!

I'm using the substream app on my Iphone.
I don't have the problem when i'm using the browser interface, maybe it can help...

I disabled transcoding in subsonic, but I don't have this option in substream. It changes nothing...
