Yes, just tested Substream... it is slow, doesn't support caching and you can't change a single bit...
the 3,99€ for iSub are totally worth it...

I had Subsonic up and running on my 212, but I returned that and bought a 712+. I followed the prerequisites for installing Subsonic, and have Java SE for Embedded 6 installed.

But when I try to install the package, it appears to be downloading, but once it gets to 100%, it returns an error message saying: "failed to download".

Any ideas?

Cheers, Carl.

Just got it figured out. I installed the .spk file manually, and all is well.

hmm thanks for the hint.
I re-uploaded all .spk version to my dropbox, where the files are hosted, I hope it will work now.

Wow! Great job. Was able to walk through it and get it up and running no problem!

Just got one question. Is it possible (with transcoding disabled) to stream video content? I am getting a "Video not found or access denied:" message followed by a "stream?pathUtf8Hex=...." error.

Would love to stream video to my tablets.

GewGaw

ps... keep up the great work!

I think Subsonic might not be the right Solution for that (yet?).
Also the Diskstation in not very powerful, so you can't transcode videos.

I have created a second player configured to play video in an external player installed on my PC (vlc), so Subsonic is just the source and everything else is done by vlc.

Beautiful package gigon. I read your blog too. Great work!!

I have it working perfectly on my DS212+ except for transcoding. If I disable transcoding it streams mp3s without issue; CPU sits at around 2-10%... almost like I wasn't doing anything at all.

With tanscoding enabled (any kind, even lame for mp3->mp3) the CPU is pegged out at 100% and there are skips every few seconds. This is a bummer because my archive is in FLAC. The workaround I am thinking of doing is to run a script to create a new 128kbps mp3 version of my entire library (in a separate folder) on my NAS and point subsonic at that. It's not a big deal, just takes more space and the conversion will take a while. It's still worth it for me to be able to stream from my DS212+. :)

I am positive that the 2GHz cpu in this NAS is powerful enough to handle the transcoding at the playback bitrate but it seems like it tries to transcode the whole file at once to "get ahead" of the playback. What are your thoughts? Please let us know if you discover a workaround or solution to the transcoding problem; some way of buffering or wrapping the process so that it doesn't peg out at 100%.

hi orion,
first of all: you can not compare a 2GHz x86 desktop CPU with a 2GHz ARM... I own a 211+ (1.6GHz) and transcoding is far away from real time, so maybe you CPU is still too weak.
Second thing: Yes you are right. Subsonic always transcodes every file from start to end, no matter if you are skipping or stopping the track.

Thanks for the reply. For now it appears the best solution is to have a decent bitrate mp3 version of the songs in a separate folder on the NAS (if you are using FLAC or something) and stream from there without transcoding.

I can't see a way without pre-transcoding your music, or if you are using iSub oder the android app: Cache your music via Wifi, so you don't have to stream it when you are away, thats what I do.
