Maybe someone should fork the app and remove the ads?

^ someone already did.

i'm sure this payment thing is a mistake. sindre hasn't been to the site recently, so i'm sure when he does he'll address everyone's concerns.

the update brings a much needed facelift to the ui. i'm very happy that part of the app got some attention : )

Yeah, that was me.

Note you need to remove the google play version of the application, since I had to sign the apk with my own keys.

I also will not be paying for this version of the application. I contributed a significant amount just last month, and was promised an ad-free experience. I will be telling others not to donate to the project as well until this issue is resolved.

What's stupid about this whole issue is that ads make so little money that they are almost worthless to put anywhere. I've had a Google account with ads on 30 YouTube videos and several websites, and it made something like $10.00 over three years before I simply deleted all the ads and closed it down. Ads make so little that even one purchase is often enough to offset months of ad revenue. Since there is obviously at least one person in this mess of posts who will refuse to donate in the future as a result of this issue, the project has clearly lost far more revenue in actual donations than the few dollars that could be made in ads.

"Not being present in the forums" is not an excuse for this situation. Developers who put up free software can be excused for being unresponsive to questions. When money becomes involved, you need to be present for your customers - not "disappeared from the forums."

------------------

I edited this post later to point something else out: advertising that this app is "free with ads" could be misleading. These ads may be wasting valuable 4G data. I purposely load up the player every weekday morning with music using "wi-fi streaming only" and then listen to eight or ten albums that day at work. Use of any 4G data is unacceptable and, for me, would be grounds for uninstallation. It might be worthwhile for someone to experiment and find out if that is the case.

Ads in a case like this are normally there to annoy you and make you pay... not actually generate substantial revenue.

Ok so I use Subsonic a bit differently than most I use it listen to audiobooks. I typically only launch the app to start it downloading the files, then I use Mortplayer http://www.sto-helit.de/index.php?module=page&entry=mpa_overview&action=view&menu=36 to listen to the book.

a few features I would love to see would be

- Sleep Timer (Stop playing after X minutes)
- Headphone connect auto start / the stop is great but I have to unlock my phone reopen the App and hit play again it would be nice just to reconnect the headphone / Aux jack in the car and have it start again.
- Manual bookmarks
- Ffwd./rewind
- Set position in track (time entry dialog)

Need some additional features before I'll upgrade and pay. Until then I'll stick with 3.4

The new app is a bit expensive when compared to others, but I've got my server and users so deeply embedded in subsonic, I don't have a choice.

Why don't you just install the app without ads?

I patched the updated subsonic app, so the app always thinks it (the app) has been purchased. No more ads! Note that this should be legal because the app is available under the GPL licence

Thanks for the fork of the app !
The only thing is that I had to uninstall the original subsonic app before installing it, because update didn't work.

Like a lot of people, I think changing to a ad-supported version without even announcing it isn't very honest.
Also, it is quite non-productive :
- subsonic community is unhappy
- a fork is easily made

Yeah, it won't update a currently installed version, you have to uninstall before installing this one.

So I am confused, why didn't you just update the app in Google play? Is it not free for everyone else?

I know it does, but you are giving away an ad free version here, I don't understand why market users have to pay for no ads, but if someone sees this thread, it's free.
