NOT HAPPY - ads in Android app

I paid a donation, for which I was promised...
Code: Select all
Love Subsonic? Support us by giving a donation and enjoy premium features like:
Apps for Android, iPhone, WP 7, PlayBook, Roku and more*.
...
No ads.
Your personal server address: yourname.subsonic.org
...
After completing the payment you'll receive a license key by email which unlocks the premium features.
So, the donation clearly covers both the server and the app. I've got my license key, but there's no way to put it in the new Android app. When you press "remove ads," it sends you to the Google Play store, and wants to extort $4.44 from you. :x

I think that the word donation is wrongly chosen. A donation is given without expecting anything back. Handing money to Sindre/Subsonic is a payment for premium features. So why is it called a donation?

Just to play devil's advocate here (I also agree that the way the ads have been added was underhanded and has not been explained at all)...

The way I understand software purchases, you are paying for a license for the existing version when you purchase it and unless other promises are made, you are in no way guaranteed free upgrades in perpetuity. Just sayin'...

This was the text when I donated €20 to use the server together with the Adnroid app:
"Please note that most of the apps are made by third-party developers, and are not maintained by the
Subsonic project. Some apps are commercial, while some are available for free.
Also note that after a 30-day trial period you need a license key to use the apps. You get a license key by
giving a donation to the Subsonic project. The license never expires and is valid for all current and
future apps. By donating you also get other benefits; see info box on the right."

Needless to say, the 'info box on the right' says:
"Donate
Love Subsonic? Support us by giving a donation and enjoy premium features like:

Apps for Android, iPhone, WP 7, PlayBook, Roku and more*.
Video streaming.
Share your media on Facebook, Twitter, Google+.
***No ads.***
Your personal server address: yourname.subsonic.org
The suggested donation amount is €20, but you can give any amount you like. €10, €15, €20, €25, €30
After completing the payment you'll receive a license key by email which unlocks the premium features."

It is implied as a reasonable expectation based on historical precedent having been past practice 32 times dating back to 2/9/2010.

To alter the basic relationship between the user base without notification is rude to say the least. Obviously, my multiple donations in support of the project as well as the support I have freely provided to hundreds of users here in the forums for the same reason were not enough payment for the developer who clearly thinks it's time for me to pony up a bit more cash.

The irony is, that if he had only asked I would have gladly supported; but when he unilaterally alters the terms of use without any explanation or discussion - I can only conclude that whatever I have contributed is not appreciated. I for one, will therefore contribute no futher.

I have given this issue some thought for the past few days and had hoped that there would be some response from Sindre. Apparently it's not a topic he's interested in addressing.

Therefore, I consider this my last public post in the forums and will only be available in the future for anyone who would like to contact me, by Private Message.

I wish to thank all of you who I've had the pleasure of getting to know through the forums these past few years and wish you all the best.

But, in this case it's explicitly stated "The license never expires and is valid for all current and future apps."

Yep it sux... But just suck up and pay $2 for DSub. I had to pay >$5 for the iPhone/ iPad app which I wasn't happy about... But considering I've been using the app for about ~12months and saved money not subscribing to spotifi or any other streaming service I'm happy to pay $2 just don't buy a coffee for 1 day :-)

I'm going to have to agree that this is a bit over-the-top for me. I can somewhat understand charging a fee for the app but $4.44 is too much. Until I see that the android app is as good as the iSub app for iPhones, I will not pay that much.

I paid for the dSub app. It's good and worth the price. I'm thankful it is being developed.

I want to add to this that I'm disappointed in version 4.7. It is not a "stable" version. I don't want to be the one to trash this awesome program (Subsonic) but 4.7 has way too many problems to be considered done. I used 4.7 for about 2 hours before I decided to down-grade back to 4.6. I am also a paying user for Subsonic as a server. I paid more than the minimum price because I was very happy and excited with the system.

I am now asking, what is happening here? Has the Subsonic passion been lost? I hope not.

Having only used the iSub app and paying for it from the start is what I'm used to but I can also understand the annoyance of having to pay for an app to remove ads when up to a point it has been free. However my reading of the above statement is that it doesn't imply that the apps are ad free but that the server is ad free after donation. Bit of a technicality but it is a shame if long time users are feeling a bit short changed given the work they've put in.

Long-time Subsonic user. Have donated multiple times - just because I loved the app (server and android client). Was "rewarded" yesterday with an ad-infested update and a link to pay more money to remove the ads. Wasn't able to locate a single new/worthwhile feature in the updated android app - other than the ads :?:

Promptly uninstalled the android app, purchased DSub, replaced the Subsonic server with MadSonic's modded version, sent a donation to MadEvil and couldn't be happier with the combo. DSub is a worthy replacement - and at $2 is reasonably priced.

Am really surprised that Sindre did this without a single mention here.
