Subsonic 3.9.beta1 released

Hi all,

Please let it be known that Subsonic 3.9.beta1 has been released :-)

The focus in this release has been on making configuration easier for the not-so-techy users.

From looking through the forum posts, the most frequently asked questions are without doubt related to network configuration, port forwarding, dynamic IP etc. So this release brings two new features that hopefully will make things a little bit easier:

o Automatically configure port forwarding for compatible (UPnP) routers.
o Access your server using an easy-to-remember address: yourname.subsonic.org

These features are available in Settings > Network.

Please let me know what you think!

There are also some other interesting new features and bug fixes, take a look at the release notes: http://subsonic.org/pages/changelog.jsp

Oh by the way: Please also note that Subsonic now has a new home: subsonic.org. The old addresses subsonic.sourceforge.net and gosubsonic.com still work but are obsolete.

Thanks for your attention,
Sindre

hello. thanks for the update first of all but i have a question. when you use the subsonic server address does this mean you can access files remotely even if your ip address changes? im running a dns server currently in case my ip does change but wondering if i no longer need to after this update. thx again.

Yes, it supports dynamic IP addresses.

Wow, this is very exiting, I will be trying this out asap. Thanks Sindre, for your continued work on this awesome app!

How does the "username.subsonic.org" feature work exactly? You have to register your name I guess, is it a first-come-first-served basis? :)

You configure it in Network > Settings. Your Subsonic server will then every two hours contact a backend server which resolves your server's IP and performs http redirects when someone contacts username.subsonic.org.

The address names are first-come-first-served, yes :-)

Thanks for the update, Sindre.

I am using it now, and ran into a bug that seems to be persisting for a while now:

Perhaps you can look into that.

Best wishes,

The network tab is clearly turned off:

Code: Select all
Status: Port forwarding disabled.

I also have the feeling that this might be causing hourly spin-ups of the dormant hard drives... . Might be something off with the off-switch for this feature?

3.9b1 Quirks

Sindre,

First off - great app! I have been a jinzora/ampache fan for year and recently tried Subsonic - am very impressed with it's clean layout easy of use. Kudo's for a great app!

I started out with 3.8 and upgraded to 3.9b1 (standalone.)

A few questions/comments:

3.9b1 fixed the uploading problems which 3.8 always said permission-denied. Thank you!

Under 3.9b1 as posted prior the UPnP and port-forwarding isn't honoring the checkbox to disable. You're already working on this.

I believe 3.9b1 has issues associating players to usernames. After upgrading to 3.9b1 and creating new users I have multiple entries for players that associate to the same username multiple times. I have player entries 2-13 and several of them point to the same username. If I delete all players it re-associates again in the same fashion. deleting all users and re-creating doesn't seem to fix.

Requests:

Would there be a way to add additional global site-level options. E.g. disable chat, now-playing, notify of new releases, caption cutoff length, upload folder location, etc so that every time a new user is created you don't need to log in and set them initially for each one?

Would there be a possibility of creating an "upload" directory that is not automatically indexed and the contents added to the catalog? I do not want to share uploaded music until after it has been tagged/renamed to follow with the rest of my catalog structure. Also could the 'automatically unzip' option be set as a global as well (and not checked by default?)

Would it be possible to pre-pend playlists with each user's name? (E.g. 'idris-' so I know how many of my users have playlists and they don't overwrite someone else's?

For the yourname.subsonic.org forwarding, does that only come with registration? I'd be happy to ship you some cash just for the redirect.

Cheers and thank you!

Hi idris,

Thanks for your comments. I hope to address at least some of your requests in later releases. When reading what you wrote on global site-level options I came to think of a potential solution that would be quite easy to implement:

When creating a new user you would optionally specify another user from which to copy all settings (chat, cut-off etc).

Regarding the subsonic.org forwarding: Yes, it requires a license but there is a 30 day trial period so you can try it out for free.

Thanks for the response - glad to see that some of the changes could be (and possibly are) in the works! great to hear. Still a bit fuzzy on the <yournamehere>subsonic.org, I must be daft and just missing where on the site you sign up for that :)

Oh, just go to Settings > Network on your Subsonic server and configure it there :-)

Hi Sindre,

just wondering: line 30 of your curren to-do file shows a restart of the player realized in the latest build... - REALLY?  Or was that a mistake?

Best wishes,
