WMA Lossless with Android...but more complete thread

Postby cmbat » Thu May 19, 2011 5:58 am

I have set up a Subsonic 4.4 server (Debian/Ubuntu through Gigapros) just to play with it.

Most of my music is WMA variable or WMA around 192. However, some stuff I love, I did WMA lossless. I have read the threads on these forums about issues with 4.4 and WMA, and I have isolated it down a bit.

First of all, anything in WMA between 128 and 192 original rip works fine playing on server, Subair, or the Android app.

However, the WMA Lossless stuff didn't play on the server OR on Android, I finally figured out that it didn't matter what I put in the transcoding fields (tried everything listed on these threads).

Here's where it gets odd. I took an album that I had in Lossless and converted to WMA 320. I uploaded again. It can now be played on the server and Subair, but not the Android app.

So, here are my questions.

1) Does anyone think there is a possible transcode instruct that will work on those files?

2) If not, do I need to take them lower (say to 256 or 192)?

3) Or, do I need to convert them to MP3, as someone else implied, because there is some DRM stuff in the file because it was originally encoded lossless (even though I owned the disc and ripped myself)?

Has anyone actually heard from the developer as to why the WMA lossless no longer works out of the box?

Thanks in advance,

CMBat

And just as a follow-up...again...the key is that I need to play it on the Android app. I find it weird that it would be a DRM issue but it plays on the server and Subair, but not Android.

Not entirely sure that I understand your question but just in passing; I have 4.4 running on my W7 home box, my entire music collection is .wma lossless [CD rips, no DRM], I convert it to mp3 for playback [at varying bitrates dependent on individual user account settings] using settings below, and it works perfectly both locally, over the internet, and on the Android app. Not so much as a stutter or hesitation ever.

Step 1: wmadec -b 16 %s -
Step 2: lame -b %b -r - -

Sorry if this is not a sensible response to your question, I just thought I'd make the point that it is possible to playback .wma lossless [albeit transcoded] reliably.

Thank you, transcoding to 320 kbps mp3 helped in my case!!!

I think WMA lossless has different codecs. My Windows Media Audio 10 Professional 440 kbps, 96 kHz, 2 channel 24 bit 1-pass CBR files work fine in subsonic but my Windows Media Audio 9.2 Lossless
VBR Quality 100, 44 kHz, 2 channel 16 bit 1-pass VBR files do not play. Does anyone have the correct codec for the 9.2? Any help would be appreciated
