How to handle heavy usage

Postby bluetooth » Wed Nov 21, 2012 3:02 pm

I've been using SS for years. It works great. I use my personal PC as the main ss server as it has the most horsepower. It is accessing music which is local to the PC, plus I also include movies and TV Series which are stored on a NAS. Subsonic interface has worked well for people as it's easy to navigate and plays everything.

The situation in the home is changing. We will soon be in a position where it's possible 4 or 5 people could be watching video over 1GB ethernet and N wireless.

So, my question is this: Am I asking SS and my PC to deliver something that it can't handle? Are others streaming video to many (4-5) users simultaneously? Should I consider using Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center for some users?

Just to answer a question in advance, I don't have easy access to all these other PC's to do real life testing.
Thanks in advance.

I have streamed to 3, maybe 4 users at a time over the internet, without any real bandwidth issues. I'm running SS on a Linux server, with music stored on a Windows box. Linux is a Celeron 2ghz processor with 2gb RAM.

The only thing I did, and this was because I use the internet from home as well, was limit my bandwidth usage to 128k (per user) on the SS side; and I'm streaming music only - no videos (yet).

Over a home network, especially 1GB and N, I don't see any problems handling even 10 users....

Thanks gurutech. I'll keep my eye on it, and see how it goes.

I have subsonic running on an x3440 processor, 6TB hardware raid 5 and 32GB of ram. At any given moment I have about 10-20 users streaming media. It has not been a problem.

What are the specs of your Subsonic box?
