Using Subsonic with Synology

Postby jdawg5600 » Fri Dec 27, 2013 7:56 pm

Hey Folks,

Before you call me a big lazy bum, I did some basic searching on the inter-webs (this forum in particular) looking for resources on how to use a Subsonic with a Synology. I am fairly competent in my technical abilities/know-how but many of the articles I came across did not make 100% sense. Basically I am in the market for a Synology because I currently host my Subsonic server on my laptop but this is not very useful as my laptop is often off unless of course I am using it. I want the Synology to host all my media files to that it acts more of a server that is always on. I am thinking about purchasing the Synology DS213j.

Can anyone help me out by answering these questions..
1.) What is the best/easiest way to use Subsonic with a Synology?
2.) Would the DS213j be sufficient for my purposes?

Thank you all in advance, it is much appreciated!

Hey jdawg5600 ... I am finally installing Subsonic on my 1511+ just now. I had been using an ancient Windows home server box forever, but it finally died.

Regarding your questions, I followed the instructions on the developers site to get it installed. I expect you've already found this, but just in case:

I found that I needed to update my NAS to the latest OS (DSM 4.3) before it would install, but maybe that was just me. The key steps were installing Java, Perl, and Serviio beforehand. I leave Serviio stopped.

Not sure if the DS213j will sufficient or not.

Hi guys,

How well does this work?
Do you have large libraries?

I'm thinking of moving my subsonic to a NAS solution to reduce power consumption - of running a full PC.
Any recommendations based on your experiences?

Alternative solutions you might look at now - post going with Synology?

All the best
