Adding folders - Sonos integration - connection lost.

Postby SaxBlaCussionIzer » Mon May 25, 2015 9:42 pm

Hi-

I am in the process of kicking the tires on Subsonic. I hit the 65K track limit on Sonos and stumbled across this as a possible alternative, so i am giving it a whirl before dumping Sonos altogether.

I'm setting this all up on a Windows PC running Window 7, with various drives connected directly to it which contain my digital music library. I "think" that i've got Subsonic set up properly. I've downloaded, installed, followed the directions to set up the Subsonic service in Sonos and enabled Sonos in Subsonic. I then tried a test case - I added a folder which (beneath it) contains my entire CD library (3000+ cd's). I saved my changes and this seems to work very well! So, i was encouraged. I can hit "Browse Library" in the Subsonic service, see my cd's, browse them and play them on my Sonos components. Very good!

However, i then went and added a second folder. Different drive, but physically hooked to the same computer. This folder contains hundreds of folders containing live recordings of shows that i have collected over the years. The files are almost exclusively in flac file format and each show is in its own folder. I was successful in adding the main folder ("Torrents - A-G", in this case). When i hit 'Browse Library", i can see my new folder. However, when i click into the folder, NONE of the subfolders display. The only thing that DOES display is an option for "Shuffle Play". When i click on that, i get the following error:

"Unable to play 'Shuffle Play' - the connection to Subsonic was lost"

I added the folder and did all of the above on the machine which physically contains my media, i see no reason for a "lost connection". I also don't see any practical reason why the subfolders under my main folder don't display. Can anybody give me any practical advice here? If i can get this to work, i think i'm "SOLD" on Subsonic as a supplement to Sonos, if i can index my whole media library.

thanx much!

Duh, i think i was able to answer my own question. In Sonos, after you add a folder, it automatically goes and indexes it. That process takes a little while. When i initially added the folder in Subsonic (for my CD library), it took no time at all. That was unexpected, since i thought it would take awhile to scan. I looked under the folders right away, and saw all my subfolders. So, that was how i thought Subsonic worked, maybe it indexed them dynamically or something.

So, when i added the second folder, i was expecting to see subfolders. When i didn't, i thought something was wrong. As it turns out, there's an option under Settings->Media Folders to 'Scan Media Folders Now'. Somehow, i missed that on the first go-around. I had to manually execute that step to add the subfolders. Once i did that, it indexed everything and my folders added now show the subfolders. I'm not sure why the two folders that i added acted differently (maybe the CD folder add used the existing Sonos index tree or something), but in short, i think i've got it all working now.

Anyways, problem solved, but i thought that i'd share my solution in case someone came across this problem later.
cheers!
