Help with home setup

Postby norfi1983 » Sat Nov 17, 2018 9:59 pm

Hi,

I have a synology ds218 running a subsonic server and several chromecasts around the house conected to my existing audio components, some of which have been grouped. I play the music via subsonic clients on my android phone/tablet.

Before I pay for the monthly subscription I was wondering if I could run the system the way I would like....as I haven't figured it out yet!!

In an ideal world I would like my wife to open a subsonic client on her phone and then select a playlist to play on Chromecast A and then maybe a different playlist on Chromecast B. If I didn't like the song on either Chromecast A or B I would then like to be able to access Chromecast A/B playlist and skip that song but from my subsonic client on my phone rather than her (or another device that I had to hand).

Hopefully this makes sense and is possible. If it is could someone point me in the right direction to get setup please.

What you're looking for is a little more akin to total remote control over Chromecasts.

Unfortunately, Chromecast is more the limitation there, in that once a device is being controlled by one service/network source, I don't know how easy it is to have another device step in and take over, and especially it isn't really possible to have another device step in just to "next" the song.

It would be possible for apps to rig up a complex scenario to manage that, if they were coded that way, and it is an interesting use-case, but nothing will do that out of the box. For my own apps (SubFire) my focus right now is on getting the Fire OS (Amazon) TV version working first before I go into more experiments in remote controls and chromecasting.

Basically the setup would be - app A would chromecast, and then app B would (somehow) send signals to tell app A to 'next', which would then update the chromecast it was controlling. I have some of that kind of remote control already established (but not yet documented) but not all of the pieces to make that work.
