Can Subsonic be run off an external WebHost/Server?

this is an interesting thread. personally, i found subsonic because i wanted to AVOID using a traditional server. i have 2tb of data already and putting that all online means
1) someone else has access to my stuff
2) costs will be exhorbitant
3) i will no longer have things available locally for quick access... or it would be a hassle to find a way to somehow sync my local drives and the remote drives
4) uploading all that data would take forever... even with a fast connection

personally, i very much like having the data on my local drives (or maybe someday on the cloud when 2tb is only a couple bucks a month)

Just an FYI, for security reasons, run subsonic as a non-privileged user, and change the directories from /var to /usr/anything-you-want

I was wondering how subsonic would run in an enterprise situation. If most files are mp3/FLAC transcoded to 128kbs and bandwidth was on an internet backbone. Or on an internal network at a company where 1500 employees could access subsonic.

1. How many simultaneous users have been on your server at once?

2. What kind of CPU load/memory usage have you seen at the max?

3. What hardware are you using (CPU/RAM/OS)?

Transcoding takes a little CPU (FLAC a little more) and a good amount of RAM is needed.

I have quad-core 2.9Ghz/4GB on a Linux server and SS (and the OS) runs completely in RAM. The directories are cached in memory too for speed. So unless a file is being accessed it reads off the in memory files. I purge the cover thumbnails cache files every hour since they take up ram too. I also have jetty set to 500MB (150.5 MB/316.4 MB being used).

I'll bite...

1. The most I've ever seen is 14. All audio, no video, no forced resampling, but most of my music is FLAC.

2. I have Subsonic set to use 256mb of RAM and it never gets there. While transcoding a whole bunch of different connections from falc, the CPU load gets to maybe 35%.

3. Windows home server, dual core Athlon X2 (2.4G), 2gb RAM, 10tb of discs.

Off topic note: I just streamed "Fist Full of Data's" at lunch to my droid while on lunch break...
