How to stream to local network

Hi there,
this must be easy, but I didnt solve it
What do I want to do?
I like to set up SS on a VM (already running) and stream the Music by Jukebox into the network that it will be readable by other computers (Ubuntu, Win,Android) and I may have the same sound in several rooms.

What I have tried:

Using RTP: Works only if SS user is root (configuration problem) and could only stream to 1 client (Maybe also configuration problem) . And on Ubuntu 12.04 pulseaudion crashs if configured by paprefs. Changing the entries in /etc/pulse/default.pa manually works, but doesnt recognise other clients :?

Further ideas:
    Using MPD
    Using Icecast
    Using Stream2IP

What is the best solution? Can someone give me a hint and configuration tipps?

Thanks

Hans

What do you mean when you say "stream the Music by Jukebox"? Are you aware of Subsonic's excellent web interface? Are you trying to stream audio to several rooms simultaneously? Stream2IP looks promising based on their web site, but I've never tried/desired multi-room audio streaming. Have you successfully streamed audio to multiple rooms before?

Bottom line, you may be able to achieve barely acceptable performance, but due to the physical nature of sound waves, you need to account for the time it takes sound waves to reach your ear. You will experience undesirable echo/delay/reverb when the sound waves from the adjacent room reach your ear after the sound waves from the speakers in the room you are in. Ever been in a house with two TV's in different rooms tuned to the same channel?

I know it seems like a cool idea to have multi-room audio streaming, but unless you invest thousands of dollars in a proper setup, you'll just have a gimmicky setup.

Dear b0bj0e,

thanks for your answer and interesting details about the physical restrictions. I have 2 floors and a basement where I am mostly jumping up and down, so I don't think so that this will be a big disharmonic source.

The web interface is beautiful. SS streams to my car, and anywhere in the world where I am. But I am looking for a solution to play the same sound simultaneus with less configuration on the substations like "My Music To Me" .

Yes, I've got it working to stream via RTP to another PC. Just used the RTP via Ubuntu 12.04 as Output device. But it must be configured manualy in the default.pa. With paprefs all sound cards are lost after reboot. That's a bug.

I've tried all mentioned programms, but I was not successful in the configuration. Maybe because I use a Virtual machine for Subsonic and I don't find the correct device. I will experiment with Stream2IP, it seems to be the best solution.

I have open ears for further ideas.

Kind Regards
Hans

I can listen to SS via Jukebox in any room in my house np - simple technology and relatively inexpensive.

Wireless headphones

Hi, thanks for the answers

the following situation is running
    SS in a VM 8)
Sound output to RTP Multicast sink (manually configured) :D
Sound on every Ubuntu PC, but not on XP and Android (because of RTP?) :o

BUT only if I start vncviewer open SS in firefox and choose "Output to Webplayer". Jukebox mode won't send any sound. Not as user, not as admin. Where do I have to configure Jukebox?, where to give the rights? :(
Any Ideas

Thanks
Hans

^- I need this too. Want one station playing on multiple devices, but in my case it will be android & apple devices.
