Hi,

I am still unclear if Subsonic Streaming is true streaming where I can play files directly off of my home server or does it have to be downloaded to the device first?

thanks.

Both. In the case of the web interface, a file is downloaded and played while it is being downloaded, but it is not saved or cached anywhere.

On most other platforms the files are pre-cached into a local directory, but they can still be played while they are being cached (as long as enough has been streamed already).

So there is no way to play the files directly from my home NAS without some sort of downloading to my android device.

With over 4TB of media, the caching is not ideal considering my tablet has only 16gb of storage.

Any other alternatives/work around?

Just turn the pre-caching of songs off and set the cache size to something ridiculously small. it will only cache the one song you are playing...

Thanks Glenn,

What about movies?

Movies are not cached, except maybe while playing them. I am unsure how JWPlayer (which is the underlying player in all web versions of Subsonic, which is what the Android Platform uses for a video player) handles the file currently being played.
