Subsonic on NAS device

Postby gurutech » Sun Nov 25, 2012 3:14 am

I'm in the market for a NAS device, so I can get rid of one of my computers, since it's starting to give me some "slowness" issues, and was considering just replacing it with a NAS, since I really don't need to replace the computer with another one.

I may also replace the 3 desktop computers I have (Linux (running Subsonic), Win8, and Win7) with a single desktop computer with a ton of RAM and hard drive space (maybe just 1TB or so, total) and 3 VM's with each of the OS's listed above.

My question of course, is if anyone here is currently using a Linux or Windows installation of Subsonic with the data (music files) stored on their NAS device, and if so, what NAS device you are using, and if you are having any problems with it in terms of file access and general configuration/setup.

I currently have a single 2TB drive that I would like to use in the NAS, but would like to get 1 or 2 more of them, to allow for data redundancy (RAID 1 or 5), so depending on price, I would either need a 2-bay NAS and an additional drive, or a 4-bay NAS with 2 or 3 additional drives. Does anyone have any inexpensive recommendations? (My current 2TB drive is a WD "Green" drive, so I would like to get similar.)

I've been looking at Synology devices, but the price seems a little high, considering I would need to get additional drives, but many of the others seem to get mixed reviews.

I personally think NAS drives are overpriced and a waste of money when you can build a far more capable and fexible server that can do everything a NAS can do and more, usually for less money with a little planning. It also helps to watch for bargains and gauge when things are on sale.

I use Antec 300 cases loaded with 120mm low speed quiet fans, a decent power supply, just about any old mobo laying around and WHS 2011 for $50. The case can easily hold 8 drives.

I used to buy Samsung F4 2TB drives for $69 ea before the Thailand flood.

Nice thing is, you don't have to do it all at once. A big case an old board and even one 3TB drive and you have a good foundation for an SS server or just a good file server. Add 2 gb NICS teamed together and you can feed the beast all day.

I used a NAS years ago, but that was the last time it made any sense cost wise. Tiger direct had a tease on 3TB drives for $89 on Thursday. Of course by the time I got to the link they were all sold out. I certainly would have bought all I could have at that price.

EDIT: It was a good deal while it lasted, but they are now gone and price is listed at $109 now - link is no longer valid.

Newegg has 2TB 7200 Seagate drives for $70 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822148834

So anytime you get around $30 - $35 per TB you probably are finding a good deal.

In my eyes, this is a good idea - i'm running this kind of setup and have much fun with it. I set up a thecus NAS n7700 http://bit.ly/V6B1FD and this is definetily better to handle than a NAS built from scratch with legacy hardware. There are smaller thecus NASs out there for a lower price.

Thecus' have the advantage, that they provide iSCSI out of the box, which is nice for the virtualizing stuff. So, a Thecus NAS (thecus also provides compatibility lists for harddrives with a vareity of capacity and price!) and a (free) ESXi-host http://bit.ly/V6Bw2A with 16GB RAM booting from USB-thumbdrive. The storage is provided via iSCSI by the NAS and performance is absolutely ok. I'm running 3 subsonic virtual maschines (ubuntu), 1 Windows Server, 1 linux server and a XBMCbuntu machine which sends audio-only to my living room.

I have no standalone PC anymore - only laptop and smartphone and hopefully a tablet after christmas. ;) I have to admit, that my setup is not the cheapest one, but I think with a 3 bay-NAS and reused hardware for the server it is possible to start with a lower budget.

go ahead!

Hi

it works fine to run Subsonic for single (maybe 2 I have not tested) account on a Thecus n7700pro (I'm talking about transcod movies now, not music) but now that I have so many that stream from me so now I use the most as storage media
with 3tbx7 in raid 6 with zfs filesystem and everything is encrypted with 256 bite aes.
I also run wingftp enterprise (https and sft)
and Twonky Media stream on it without problems.

the Subsonic is on a home-built computer with a 32-gig ecc memory, amd 6232, intel 520 ssd, tripple failover Gigbit network.

have run 12 clients simultaneously without problems (server handle more but lacked more things to test with)
Subsonic servens hardware I bought from ebay for half of what pricet Thecus N7700 Pro cost me
but then I have not counted on all hard drives.

But you have the advantage of n7700pro with the low power consumption
and that Thecus has hotswop, RAID6 and ZFX, AES-256
and it do not take any space

That Thecus looks nice, but it's way out of my price range... I've been looking at a Synology device, but not sure if I should get an older 4-bay device, or a newer 2-bay device. Both are around the same price, but I would end up spending a little more on the 4-bay due to needing 4 drives. I have a 2TB drive already, so I'm thinking to get either the 2-bay Synology and another 2TB drive, or the 4-bay and 3 2TB drives.

The problem then would be trying to get my current drive mirrored/RAIDed with the others without losing the data currently on the drive! The drive is only about 1/2 full, so 1TB of data can be split among a few other computers/drives if necessary and then copy back to the NAS after installing the drives.

Right now I have maybe 100-200gb of music, and another 800gb (or so) of movies, but I still have a lot more of my movies on DVD I need to rip to disk, and that may be another 500gb, so my 2TB drive may be getting full soon too!

Hmmm, Thecus 4100 is only $269... that may work... :-)
