Switching from MS

Postby platinumthomas » Sat Jun 22, 2013 6:41 am

I just read a very disturbing article recently, http://blogs.computerworlduk.com/open-e ... /index.htm and I am ready to move to Linux. I have an HTPC that is running Subconic. Which distribution would work best with Subsonic?
Thanks.

I'm running on Centos, which is similar to Red Hat and Fedora. I know others are running on Ubuntu without any issues either. I was more familiar with Fedora when I got into Linux, so I stuck with that.

I like Ubuntu more, mostly because of the huge user community that usually has answers for just about everything.

I'm running Subsonic just fine on Slackware. What all will this PC be used for? If you're planning to switch to Linux for all of the normal HTPC uses, I'm pretty sure Subsonic will be the least of your concerns. In theory it should run on any distribution with a Java runtime.

You might Google "linux htpc distribution" or similar and do a little research. If I remember correctly there's a distro out there setup solely to run XBMC that might be a good place to start.

Tempting, but let's stay on topic.

When I was futzing with low-power options, I tried a Seagate Dockstar running Debian off a USB thumbdrive...it worked great as an OS for SS, but naturally my collection size and memory limitations on the unit prevented it from being the perfect solution, for which I'm still on the hunt.
