UPNP on XBMC

Just installed subsonic 4.9 on ubuntu 11.10. cant get XBMC Gotham to play files via UPNP.
I have also tried Skifta, Bubble UPNP on android and Media Monkey on windows as clients.
Selecting "music" does nothing. <edit> on some systems (media monkey) it simply lists "music" as a subdirectory of "music" infinitely.
I have one playlist... selecting that will show me the list of songs. It loads cover art for each mp3 which means it *must* be reading the mp3 file. However the file refuses to play.
